Grammar

I'm one of those people who can be frightfully pedantic about spelling and grammar. I've been picked up before about being a snob about written English, and there are people who find it quite amusing when I write badly...which happens all too often with babybrain/Sprog "helping" me type.

I live in Hull, and I'm always appalled by the dialect here. Phrases that I come across on a daily basis here that give me the heeby-jeebies include "I aren't" and, for example, "he tret me really badly" instead of "treated". Worse still, there's a cafe on the way into the town centre whose sign proclaims it to be "Neise,s Diner". No no NO.

My finest moment was when a new development of apartments was being built in Cottingham, which is a nice village outside of Hull. They had a banner which said "RESERVATIONS NOW BEEN TAKEN". I sent the head office an email, attaching a picture of the banner, stating that if their workmanship was as shoddy as their grasp of the English language they should probably offer the apartments at a large discount. I never got a reply, but the banner was quickly removed.

I don't like to read text speak on forums, or posts that are just one whole, no paragraphs or anything.

The odd spelling mistake im ok with, we all make them.

Im not the best at grammar myself and have probably made loads of mistakes in this post alone  but I don't often use text speak on forums. I can understand text speak though and im terrible for using it myself on msn but not on forums etc

The whole your, you're, their, there, they're thing annoys me though and I always pick up on it

Plus a couple of people on here who have posted saying they don't like text speak I have seen typing FWIW, IRC etc  Now this may not be classed as text speak but it kind of is the same thing?

I don't use text speak but do use certain abbreviations/acroymns such as BTW, IIRC, FWIW. Just a few standard main ones. I don't go into the whole long list of abbreviations. Not the same thing as text speak either IMHO ;) I use them in type on forums and IRC etc but not in real life. I never really use these abbreviations in text either. Just on forums and IRC where I often type lots of text and abbreviate a few expressions/figures of speech.

It may be seen as the same thing by some but consider that for example my posts are always written fully otherwise. I don't see it as I am posting in text speak an entire post or the main content. I am simply using a few abbreviations of expressions that are generally universally used and well known. The rest of my content is fully written and I don't see it as text speak or even close to the same thing in that respect :)

To me text speak and abbreviations are the same.
Your still shortening words.

im not wrting txt spk and hving ppl read wht i am saying so its hard 2 read and ppl give up and not bther with wht i am saying or fink i cant spel or am lazy

I write full words, sentences and paragraphs. I use punctuation and correct grammar as far as possible. I then use a few abbreviations of expressions, not words, that are widely recognised and understood on internet forums and IRC chat.

I don't consider that to be 'text speak' from where I am sitting. People can understand what I am saying or conveying in my posts I think.

But of course, you can see it otherwise.

There are sooo many cock ups like these around. I remember when I worked in the hotel we all got on really well with the DJs and used to have a great joke with them. Eventually the manager of them sold the company and it was one of the DJs that bought it. He spent a fortune on new equipment including banners, light boxes with the company logo and a brand new Ford Transit. On them all he had put "Executive DJ's". He wasn't too impressed when I pointed it out and offered to work some magic with a tippex pen

I am shocking for typos but tbh im so lazy i cant be assed to correct them, im always adding extra letters into everything i say, i just type before my mind acutally thinks i think :rotfl:

none of us are better than others, just different! (eek i am such a hippie lol!)

c'mon evry1 lets embrace the diversity and evolution of english! lets hear it 4 txt spk! :cheer:

Text speak annoys me as i can't understand it but spelling and grammar doesn't. I find spelling difficult sometimes and find it hard to know when to use certain punctuation and in what context to use some words. The only reason i don't have as many errors in this post is obviously because people will be looking for them  (check out how many people have edited theirs )
I have a few REALLY IRRITATING friends who constantly point out spelling errors all the time as if they are the god of spelling or something...drives me mad! :shakehead:
I also think its really mean to not be tolerable of people who have a problem with spelling and grammar as some people can't help it. That was not directed at anyone by the way.

i was pretty good at english at school.
:)
i don't use capitals on here when i should but like to think my posts are readable!!

( my excuse aswell is my dodgy hands at the moment!! :wall:  )

what i don't understand if anyone can help is when people write like this;

SoRrY tHiS iS jUsT a RanDoM mEsSaGe dId NoT kNoW wHaT To wRIte!

make your mind up capitals or lower case letters!!!! :wall:

Hey I'm rubbish at grammer/spelling lol.

Everyone can speak how they wish for I care :)

Happy new Yr ppl :)

Av a gr8 new yr

I noticed at my work that when some people were writing in letters or form filling, then they would use text speak. Youse is a favourite that we would see.

My pet hate though is when people dont pay attention to 'i before e except after c'. I got this drummed into me at school and still that wee saying goes through my head.

ah, i am a bit dyslexic with that u see, i remember the phrase, but forget if it was "i before e except after c" or "i before e except BEFORE c"  and i think there are a couple of exceptions to the rule as well. that boys' name Niel/Neil always gets me the most i have to ask the spelling EVERY TIME :wall:

My spelling is bad becasue i'm dyslexic, and i don't always notice mistakes when I read it back ( but i alway have in in my sig on forums so everyone knows  ),
However I do notice when you're / your is used in the wrong way which anoys me.

triipaws - I have the same problem with Neil ( the spelling of the name), in fact I was meant to email someone with that name in work today but forgot because I had to check the spelling first.

Sorry but your post really made me laugh. I doubt the person who sorted out the banner actually physically built the develpoment :rotfl: I can't believe you took the time to take a photo and email head office :rotfl: Fair play though :)

I must admit I do notice mistakes sometimes where you shouldn't really see mistakes. For example in Isaac's nursery brochure there are spelling mistakes which I thought was quite unprofessional, but it shows we are all human and make mistakes. Most books I read have typos and mistakes and they are proof read. I'm not talking crappy books either so its not a reflection of my choice of book

God I'm really paranoid now about my grammar. Damn this thread!

I think it is the same in a way, people only understand those abbreviations if they are familiar with using forums etc the same way younger kids are familiar with text speak so they understand it and see nothing wrong with it. Don't get me wrong, I often use BTW & iykwim among others and I am definately not 'sticking up' for text speak as it hurts my brain to read it. In fact I posted about it not so long ago

Plus i'm chuffed, I can't be that bad at posting if you actually read mine

Poor Spelling? This is a sign (supposedly in English) thats outside a restaurant where we live.. I thought it was funny...

Well, "Fisch" would be the German spelling. Could be worse, they could have spelt it Ghoti
