Hi there,

I thought I'd post a thread where we could post some golden tips we've picked up along the way regarding anything baby related. If poss could we keep it to things that generally will work for most babies rather than just special tricks our own little ones individually react to? Having said that, if it is really a pure gold tip that you think we will all benefit from then please share!

Here are my two for now:

1) When giving medicine like baby calpol or infacol or other things baby resist taking, put the desired amount of medicine in a bottle teat and the baby will suck and swallow it with no fuss about the taste.

2) Bottle cleaning brushes - don't pay £3-£4 for a bottle brush - they do excellent mickey/minnie mouse ones in the pound shop/ 99p store which have sponge on the bottom and they are every bit as good as the Dr Brown ones and better than the tommee tippees for getting the bottom of the bottle clean.

Great tips and greattt thread!?!

My tips would be -

1) Routine from the v start (so they never have to 'adjust' to a routine)

2) To get babies used to lumps , jelly :)

Will add more as i think of them! lol xx

Super thread - looking forward to picking up some tips!

1) Rusks are great for teething if you don't mind a little mess
2) Get babes used to beakers as soon as possible

Thanks for sharing them ladies..I do have problems in giving infacol to my son so will try using the advice 1 from today..:)

Great idea! Love the medicine idea though have to say I disagree with 2 of the other tips.

I don't know what works for other babies, just my own but will have a think x

Oh good idea
1, getting a sleep routine establisher as early as you can will make life so much easier , so make a difference between naps and night time . at night we close the curtians put on quieter music , give a warm bottle before sleep and but a hot water bottle on the bed until we're ready to lay her down then pop it out .

When they have a cold and theirs sod all you can do for them put a pillow (or something similar) under the cot or mattress to slightly raise them. They will sleep like beasts and its so much nicer for them :)

Ooooh and also, a tip someone on here gave me which worked was to pop baby in their bouncer and bring them into the bathroom when you are having a shower and the steam helps to clear their airways- worked a treat!

TIP!!

Babies with dry skin - abit of olive oil in their bath works AMAZING!! slippery tho so be careful! :D x

I'll have to try that! Charleys got very dry skin so I've got to apply olive oil to his skin everyday and I'm not allowed to use bath products on him! I've got so much johnson's stuff!!

The best thing I did with Lacey was too introduce proper food at 6months and not jarred food. She's never been fussy with food whereas my friends boy always had jars and by the time his mum decided to give him proper food, he refused it and took until he was 2 to eat a proper meal.
That might just be for him though why he's like that but I'm gonna do the same with charley and only use jar's if I'm out.

i use ella's kitchen pouches for madison as they taste like proper food :) but expensive so cudnt use every day like.... yeah put it in the bath my sil lo skin actually cracked it was that dry and it worked immediately lemme know! xx

anyone got any for baby constipation??

Layla hasnt been for a poo since sunday night, its now tuesday, shes trumping away like a trooper, plenty of wet nappies, but no poop, i can tell its hurting her cos she is straining and trying to do one.... just nothings coming out, i really dont want to phone the OOH midwifes but dont really know what to do to help her

oh on sunday she became a bottle fed baby and has pooped since, but only on sunday, im guessing its the formula making her a bit blocked up, but need to help her now,

any ideas?

xxx

does she take water, when madison was younger they told me 4ozs between every feed! i gave her 2 but that was all the time like so she went good... also baths help them go and if shes constipated lie her on floor and gently massage her tummy its supposed to break it up iykwim... oooh the water try give it warm as it goes thru system quicker? xxx

With regards to constipation - like Lisa said, massage the tummy. Also gently move their legs, as if they were riding a bicycle. Don't force them though :)

Oooh! I've just thought of a tip! For breastfeeding Mummy's and Mummy-to-be's!

1. Do NOT underestimate the need to have your baby latched on correctly! I thought 'Hey, how hard can it be, you just stick it in it's mouth right?' Wrong! I paid the price too! Excrutiating, cracked and bleeding nipples! I came sooooo close on 3-4 occassions to sending my OH out for formula as I was crying in pain whilst feeding Evie :-( and...

2. Lansinoh Cream - it is a godsend! About £9.99 a tube but brilliant for sore nipples! You can get it on prescription so get to the docs if you've sore nips! :)

If you are going to massage babys tummy For constipation make sure you do it in a clockwise direction, if you do it anti clockwise it will make it worse xxx

Interesting! Why is this? x

It's the way the digestion flows! If you do it anti clockwise, it'll clog you up more!

I defo agree with Lacey's Mummy's tip!

I've looked after 100's of babies in my time and it almost always seems like the babies that are jar fed are more fussy than the 'proper food' weaned babies. I defo think it's because of the consistency of the jarred food and because proper food almost always have stronger flavours than jarred food. It's also a lot cheaper in the long run and also makes you eat more healthily because there's always tons of fruit/veg in the house!
