I got diagnosed with this last week and had my first meet with diabetes midwife today. She's given me a glucose monitor thing so I can test my blood four times a day from now on. I'm seeing the specialists on Thursday so should know more then but at the mo it sounds like if I'm lucky it can be controlled by diet and exercise, but if not I'll need either tablets or injections. If diet is ok, they will induce me at 41 weeks if no baby, if drugs needed then will get induced at 39 weeks, because there is more chance of baby being stillborn if left after then. That's a bit scary!

Does anyone have any experience of this?

As a little extra kicker, my brother just bought and gave me a bar of liquid cherry Lindt from Selfridges that is now hidden away for me to scoff when baby comes, gutted!

Sorry hun just noticed this. I don't have any experience but just wanted you to know I read.

Sorry me neither! I can't imagine how hard it is to hide away chocolate though!!! Hope all goes well for you.

xx

Cheers me dears! Doesn't look like anyone else in here has it, just lucky old me!

Sorry didn't want to read and run xx

I have just been diagnosed, I have my 1st appointment tomorrow so I'll let you know how I get on. I say first appointment I actually have 4 hospital appointments tomorrow relating to it because it's been found so late on they are now rushing to get me in for everything.

They have already said they would like to induce me at 38 weeks.

Oh well I'm sorry to hear it as it's crap, but am interested to hear what how your appointments go. They told me they would induce me at 39 weeks only if I needed medication, so assume yours will need medication - did they say why 38 weeks? Wonder if it's an area difference or a severity difference? Good luck anyway x

I think it's probably an area difference. My midwife said I was only slightly raised and couldn't understand why they wanted to induce me. It's down to the consultant now though. I'll keep you informed!

Hi Ive just had my little girl 3 weeks ago today and I got diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes at 16 weeks so very early on!
Had to test my bloods 6 times a day, and was on medication for a few weeks but bloods didnt settle so I then went onto insulin injections at 29 weeks twice a day and they were absolutely fine!

The needle is so fine you dont feel it, and its so easy to do so dot worry if you end up on injections!

I was induced at 38 weeks and she was 8lbs 6.5oz.

I was very overweight and last June we changed our lifestyle when my DH was diagnosed with diabetes and that week I feel pregnant! Since getting pregnant and having Matilda Ive lost 2st 12lbs and I am carrying on with our healthhy eating and have my diabetes check in May to see if I still have it or if it was purely gestational diabetes so just stay as helahty as you can and you will be fine xxxx

Well I had my appointments today. All went well, the scan showed our perfect little girl :)

Had a check up and an exam and I was 1cm dilated so she did a stretch and sweep (ouch!) and I've been booked in for an induction for 10th April, but will have another sweep before then to try and nudge her.

In the meantime I've been given one of those finger prick things and I've got to test 3 times a day until I have the baby.

Either way when this baby is out I'm going for a lifestyle change, I need to be more active anyway.

Glad to hear it went well :)

I'm seeing the endocrinologist and dietician tomorrow so will hopefully find out more. I've been finger pricking 4 x a day since Monday so have a bit of a record to show him now so should get to find out if I will need medication or not.

Thanks for your experience Wilma :D

Mine got picked up by my 28 week bloods at midwife being a bit high, got sent for a glucose tolerance test (also called fasting glucose test) which came back borderline, so had another one a couple of weeks later which came back as abnormal and confirmed I had slipped from borderline to diabetic.

Update on mine - I saw three people today, a nursey type who weighed me, a consultant specialist man and a dietician.

The consultant said I have to not gain any more weight during my pregnancy on top of the stone and a half I've put on so far, and I'm meant to exercise 45 mins a day (though that will depend on how I feel with my SPD). I'm also going back in a week to see if my glucose levels are being managed ok by my new improved (treat-free and tragic) diet and having a growth scan in 3 weeks to check babykins.

The dietician was really nice but as an ex Science teacher and on-off hardened dieter I kind of knew all the stuff she was saying, though she did tell me it's better to have two squares of Dairy Milk than a diabetic chocolate bar, worth bearing in mind since diabetic chocolate costs a bomb and tastes like wax.

So all being well next week with my levels, will be able to continue on like this and hopefully have a normal birth rather than be induced.

My dietician was really nice too actually but again it's pretty standard stuff, I suppose it just gives you the official nod on what you should be eating etc. I didn't realise that fruit juice isn't as healthy as you think because of all the natural sugars.

Testing after breakfast and my blood sugar was 7.9 so slightly high. I had shreddies with a little bit of added sugar so I guess it's just plain shreddies from now! (I know the sugar was a bit naughty, but wanted to see if it would affect it!)

Hehe I know, I keep having half a teaspoon of sugar on my rice krispies or corn flakes - tastes so boring without it! The dietician was trying to convince me to get splenda or something like that to put on instead but it looks and tastes horrible, think I'd rather do without! My sugar levels have been reading ok even with the little bit sugar so I'm not giving up just yet.
