Been meaning to write this down for a few days, for you ladies as much as for me. The whole experience was such a blur and think it will do me good to replay in my head.... so here goes!
On Monday 26th (due date) I had a sweep at 9.30am and was 2cm dilated. At around 2pm I started having pains and a show. The pains were coming about every 10mins and were manageable on my ball. I rang my mum who lives 2 hours away at 11pm and told her to travel up as I knew something was going to happen soon. She arrived and by this point the pains were every 6mins and getting worse.
I became quite anxious and had a panic attack which then led to the decision to go to hospital so I would feel more relaxed.. We got there about 2am Tuesday 27th morning and was admitted onto labour ward with my waterbirth room!
At one point the pains were excruciating and I asked could I get in the pool, to be told no!.... I had put so much weight on during this pregnancy that my BMI was too high... I was really pissed off at this; why even put me in the room with the pool!!
Things seemed to be progressing so they decided to examine me...... I was still 2cm!!!! but pains coming every 3mins and was on the gas and air at this point. Lots of different positions but just could not get comfortable, then the pains just started to taper off.... 4mins, 5mins, 6mins etc... until they got to about 7mins... Very annoying
At around 9pm on Tuesday the midwife advised me to have some diamorphine as nothing was going to happen soon and I needed some sleep. After having this the pains tapered off even more and we came home. I managed 2 hours sleep in my own bed and woke up with agonising pains, I couldn't walk and hobbled into a bath. That did not help!! So off we pop again, back to the hospital (after trying to manage the pain as long as possible, I did not want to be sent away again!) ... got there at about 9am Wednesday morning. Chris, my OH describes the car journey as 'hell'.... I don't remember much but on the 5min journey I had about 3 contractions and nearly ripped the door handle off 0
Sooooo......
Got my room sorted, no pool this time just a smaller room. And here we go! Examined - 3cm 0 ...... very shit for your mental state!
Felt like an eternity in there but after hours and hours of very close contractions and tons of gas and air I was fully dilated at 4am Thursday morning. My waters hadn't gone at this point (or so I thought) ... so a doctor came in to break them, in went the big stick! and nothing, no waters at all. I have no idea when they went???
The midwife came in and said we will start pushing at 4.45am, I was exhausted and opted for an epidural at some point... my mind is quite hazy at this point. the contractions were constant and was literally just on gas and air non stop. The epidural took about 30mins to do... the aneath-cant spell.... doctor, lol.... was not very self confident and was coming across, actually asked some people to leave the room so he could do it! Anyway so that was done, I could still feel my legs and the urge to push, just took the edge off!
So pushing commenced at 4.45am and this continued for 2 hours! He wasn't budging. I asked for a mirror and when I saw the action down there I thought I could see his head.... I asked and was told a stern 'no ruth that's just you' - I was so swollen down there that my labia had ballooned and resembled tennis balls haha
The midwife got a doctor in and they decided that I would not be able to deliver naturally and needed an instrumental birth, forceps. and if not possible that way then a C-section. I was prepped for theatre and off me and my OH went, my mum waiting like a nervous wreck in the room.
We got into theatre and the epidural was upped... started to take effect and the doctor was doing his checks with the cool spray. I could still feel the coldness down below.... he kept checking and was telling me that I was numb, I wasn't! I was numb above the pelvis and in the top of my legs but my vag was still very sensitive. But this didn't stop the doctor telling the other doctor that I was ready and in the forceps went!!! Queue horrendous scream from me and bewildered looks among the many many people in the room. The forceps where then ripped back out.... such fun!
The decision to do a spinal was then made and to go for the c section. I was propped up, made to lean forward and this went on for about 20mins - couldn't get the spinal in! nightmare. So talk of putting me to sleep for the section..... In this time my legs became numb and the previous epidural was now taking effect, the spinal was ditched and we went ahead with forceps, now happy I was numb down below.
I was given an episiotomy and the forceps went back in, the difference was a wolrd away. I could feel immense pressure but no pain at all.
On the 3rd push his head came out, I couldn't feel my contractions so was being told when to push. after his head came out the contractions stopped!!... everyone was just waiting and then the doctor said, 'we cant wait any longer you just need to push'.... so 2 more forced pushes and he was out! I got stitched up and bobs your uncle! (long story short ha)
My blood pressure dropped to an alarming rate and I was unconscious for a while afterwards too.
during labour my temp reached 38.8 and I was having what can only be described as little seizures. very scary. Because of this, and not knowing when my waters went, there was a risk of infection for me and George. He was rushed off to special care and I don't really remember seeing him. He wasn't kept there, but was on antibiotics via drip a few times each day.
I'm sorry if that's all a bit of a mess, but it is in all of our minds tbh. My OH is scarred for life bless him, felt so helpless all the way through. The entire thing was not to plan, to say the least and was very traumatic. Knowing that no matter how hard I was pushing he wasn't going to come out, reassures me. I felt a bit of a failure at the time, but he would never have come naturally I was told. Knew he was going to be trouble!
Anyway, I've rambled on so much haha... now have a look at his mush!
