My HV suggested frying corey some home made chips in olive oil? To give him extra calories? hes on the 50th centile btw!

Seemed odd to me?? I dont fry our food, why would I fry his?

And if this is OK... then what on earth else food do I fry for him!?

If it were me I wouldn't deep fat fry them. What I sometimes do is chop up stuff like potato, carrot, sweet potato, pepper etc, drizzle with olive oil then put them in the oven. IMO deep fat frying is too much, we don't have anything like that.

ohhh my, what kind of bloody hv is she??
dont fry anything, that isnt good for him at all.

Well, I did wonder, I grill anything me and OH have thats like that, you knwo fish n that...

BUT I really dont cook n that, so I dont know if it would be OK to feed him like, I assume she meant shallow fryed foods in olive oil!?

Thought I should ask before I pump him full of oil!?

Well if it were me I wouldn't even shallow fry. I don't think it would be good, and also I don't eat anything fried anyway. Ella is just above the 50th centile now, and is going towards the 75th and she eats mainly fruit and veg, yogurt and the odd biscotti. I think what you're doing is fine

I use tiny bit of olive oil when roasting veggies in the oven and when doing an egg but always drain it off before giving it to LO. And that is only something we give him rarely.

I'd not shallow fry or deep fry. I'd maybe give some sweet potato? Or what about pasta? Its not about calories is it? I always look at the carbs and so on.

deep fried battered mars bar perhaps??? honestly what a thing to suggest. My HV told me to give Seren chips and ketchup to get her used to finger foods - she was 8 months old

Has he lost weight or something? 50th centile is average weight for the population

Nah, not lost... floating along the 50th as usual. She was suggesting that before he gets mobile and loses weight, to get him more callories LOL.

So, I poped out today and bought a deep fat fryer and some mars bars on your advice beanie!! ;)

I know, what a thing to say... fry him chips!!! :rotfl: Even I dont get home made chips!

God knows, just one in a long line of suggestions from her that I'll ignore then!!

 We have chips sometimes but I cut up potatoes and spray them with fry lite then put them in the oven and Maddison has a couple of them but I would never give her fried chips :?

 Maddison loves McDonalds fries too...but not as much as I do!!

Oh my goodness! You sometimes wonder where they get their ideas from lol!

Generally, heating olive oil to the kind of temperatures produced on the hob turns it from a healthy fat into a trans fat, which is worse than saturated fat (When it smokes is when it's reached that temp). If you follow her advice on the olive oil front, I would just pour a tiny bit of organic olive oil over some potatoes cut into wedges (put them in a tupperware box and shake is the easiest way I find!) and then bake at a low heat until soft.

I was going to make this point as well - olive oil is a good fat but loses the goodness when heated to high temperatures. (Rape seed oil is better)
I would have thought though your LO will just start eating more when he starts moving around - not needing fatty foods! It does seem like a bizarre comment.

My HV suggested this too, as one o his first finger foods at just over 6 months!

omg  why not give him a block of lard too :wall:

These are supposed to be the experts :shakehead:

50th centile!! god my son has never been near the 50th centile and has dropped even more now hes cruising and tearing around crawling. and hes perfectly healthy. Id never give him grease to 'fattern' him up. I would of thought she'd suggest more dairy and blue milk in foods or cheese! but i dont see why you would need to make a baby gain weight that is around the 50th centile at that age!! a 7month old would do just fine on milk alone!

lol, I know... Iv resisted buying a deep fat fryer and doing him a Mars bar  !!

I think she was a little stumped as he cant have milk/cheese/dairy, or anything with milk in it... so oil was the only suggestion she had!

Still, I think hes doing just fine :)

Gawwd i do sometimes wonder whether some of these people have deep-fried their brain (in olive oil or otherwise  ) Olive oil is very good for him, but raw, not cooked! What you could do is, given that he cant have dairy, if you do mashed tatties for him, add a little raw olive oil to that - gives a nice flavour (I think) and will give him the extra cals, if you feel he needs em - although he seems to be great to me at 50 percent. After all that is bang on average - isnt it?
