Hey Girls,

After years of buying all fresh veg and 50% of it going brown and ending up in the bin I've started buying frozen veg. Is it ok to do this with every meal or should we get some fresh in there as well? I boil it, and I dont have a steamer so I always boil fresh veg as well.

Also when Chester is weaned in a few months time, can he be given frozen, boiled veg or is this not suitable?

Thanks x

i always have some frozen veg in my freezer in case i need it- all the nutrients get locked in so its no worse for you than
fresh veg! its well handy and easy to cook aswell as its already prepared :-)

Oh yeah and its fine for bubba too- i used to boil it and mash it up for Hayden! its fine-as long as you don't overboil it it has the same vitamins etc as fresh veg!

Supposed to be just as good for you as fresh, the only problem I have with it is that I'm not to fond of the texture but all the goodness is still there

i use mainly fresh veg but always have all the veg i like in the freezer.

this might be a really daft question... but how do you know if you've over boiled it?
how long on average does it take? lol.

I always buy fresh (as i have a chef for a OH so hes funny with stuff like that) he also mainly cooks... i should probably ask him actually lol. :rotfl: :rotfl:

If you want to steam on the hob why not invest in a steamer pan/seive for a pan. I use one with 3 layers on it and also have a separate plug in steamer for rice and veg. But a hob one can double as a saucepan also.

I'd go fresh veg sometimes as it has a better taste and texture than frozen. Also some veggies just don't freeze well and therefore are much better fresh.

Re boiling veg, it does lose some nutritional quality when boiled. No escaping that. Steaming is the only way to make sure as much is locked in as possible. Then it can be as hard or well cooked as you like it. I prefer crunchy veg so always lightly steam. Boiled veg I find too soggy even if only cooked a short while.

I've started buying canned veg. Like you most of the veg just sits and goes brown and as I get shopping delivered on a Wednesday doesn't last until Sunday roast. Can't afford to be going out to the shop through the week. I find canned tastes much better than frozen.

I always buy fresh cos it tastes better but am considering using more frozen as I've read in a few places that it is actually more nutritional - it's frozen within a few hours of being picked in many cases whereas fresh veg has to travel and by the time it even reaches your fridge via the supermarket shelves it's lost quite a lot of its nutritional content. By the time it's sat in your fridge for 2 or 3 days it may have no goodness whatsoever!

I wish we had space to grow our own! x

Yeh I think birdseye pea's are picked to frozen in 2 hours, which is pretty impressive! I've got a few different frozen veggies in my freezer now so gonna go thru them, work out what we like. Should save us a bit of money as well, its only about £1 for a bag of frozens!

Microwaving works as well as steaming when you want to keep in the flavour, I microwave most of my veg. If you're using frozen veg you don't even need to add water as there's enough water on the veg itself, just pop it in a bowl, partially cover it and zap it, easy :)

I always keep those birds eye steamed veg bags in the freezer incase i can't be arsed, they are just little bags that you put in the microwave and they steam the veg for you..... they taste so sweet and yummy i could eat the whole packet.
