Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice about food to avoid on holiday abroad, in particular in Menorca? We're going away for a week on an all inclusive deal but am a little anxious about what I should/shouldn't eat...

I've just been following the nhs guidelines here but unsure if these apply to other countries. E.g. Cold meats I don't have any problem eating in uk, but don't know if this applies to meats in other countries? Is it only safe in uk due to the production process? Or is the risk small everywhere?

Same with cheeses. There is a very common cheese in menorca called Queso de Mahon and it can either be pasteurised or unpasteurised. From what I gather, the texture is similar to Edam and some is as hard as Parmesan, so as it's always a hard (ish) cheese, I think it's ok to eat whether it's pasteurised or not? Is that right?

And obviously, being all inclusive, it's going to be buffet-tastic and we're advised to eat food that hasn't been kept warm for ages. Does anyone have any tips?

I know I probably sound like a right worrier, but I think I'll enjoy holiday much more if I feel confident about the food side of things, so am trying to plan before I go!

Thanks if ou can help xx

Other than that, I'll avoid runny eggs, pates and all the obvious things. I'm such a foody, so it will be weird to be at a buffet nd not just try one of everything!!!

Meat and all other foods have to be kept when cooked above 70 (i believe) and no longer out than 90 mins. Look out for food that has come fresh out of the kitchen when something's topped up have that instead of something that has been there for ages and make sure if you do eat meat that it is thoroughly cooked

I've just been to France and found it abit of an issue! Didn't help that I went to the region that specialises in goats cheese (unpasteurised) and foie gras. Despite the menus being filled with cheese I couldn't eat and pate i still found stuff I could.

You just have to take your time picking your food. Make sure you go to eat before your really hungry as then you'll be able to spend the time figuring out what everything is!

Thanks Minivoid and Pumpkin, some good advice :-) I've just used google translate to put some phrases in too, such as 'is this pasteurised?' and 'does this contain raw egg?' so I feel a bit more prepared.

I'd avoid drinking tap water and buy bottled. Bear in mind salads may be washed in tap water but I don't know if that might be going a bit overboard. xxx

Also following on from what dotty women is saying try and avoid ice as this may be done with tap water.

Xxx

What's wrong with tap water??!

Whenever I go on holiday I live off pizza and chips after I had severe food poisoning in Spain from a steak! Left me ill for weeks!
Obviously you can't do that when you're pregnant and its not healthy for bubba.
Just stay away from salads - I hear they're bad abroad..And of course if its meat make sure it's cooked. I would stay away from Ice cream too!
Enjoy yourself hun - jealous!!!!xxx
