The risk after 12/13 weeks I think decreases, I haven't been taking it because it makes me physically sick, I have been eating tons of marmite instead (has lots of folic acid in)
I took it whlst TTCing and up till 16 weeks at the advice of midwife, she said by then the spine is developed so the risk of spina bifida decreases after that
After week 12 i dont think its too much of a problem if you stop taking it. I am the 1 in 1000 who has had a pregnancy with spina bifida and i must beg anyone who is ttc to start taking folic acid. Someone has to be that 1 in 1000 that has the sad news and you should do all you can for it not to be you...if thats possible.
I go in tomorrow to have my pregnancy ended and its the most dreadful thing you could go through...I have been advised that you should take folic acid at leat one month before ttc. This reduced the odds by a massive 70%. Apparently even if you start taking folic acid after you find out your pg it could be too late. You have to take it before as your egg could be effected even before you get pg.
I dont mean to scare anyone but please do anything you can to stop becoming me if you still ttc. I eat very well. I never have ready meals. I cook all my food from fresh. I am quite fit and healthy so you can never tell!! There is no history of it in my family either so please please take care.
If i get through tomorrow i would like to look forward but next time i will have all the tests i can. I suggest going to BUPA. They can do a test very early on for downs and the blood reading could also help to suggest if you are at risk from spina bifita. A scan at week 15 could show it up so i am going to opt for that as well. I just pray that in the future i get given another chance.
I will never forget my baby girl, Angel. She is still with me and i love her but its a very hard choice we have had to make!!!! Please all look after yourself!!!!!!!!
i am taking sanotogen pronatal have been since ttc and still do now i remember most days but think i will definitely make more of an effort now as well.
