Hi ladies, so I've got my first midwife appointment on Tuesday and I don't have a clue what to expect? Is it a quick hello, of do they do tesrs etc? Xx

I think it depends where you are? In Scotland it's a quick first chat to get all your details etc then your second appointment is your booking in with all your tests etc x

Hi hun. Usually they go through a few things with you such as family history and medical history and then refer you for a 12 week scan and answer any questions you may have xxx

There was nothing quick about my booking in, the form takes ages and you need to know the family medical history of both parents so quiz people beforehand if possible (I think I went with my husband first time so that helped). It will vary according to mw but I also got given lots of info on the tests and screening you'll be offered and I was given info on antenatal classes. Given a pot to wee in, booked in for blood tests and flu jab, weight check, given emergency numbers etc. It's all good but we definitely need the full hour appointment.
Xx

Mine lasted just over an hour, as caseysmummy says they go through your details, family & medical history as well as your height weight, blood pressure bmi.. i got given some leaflets and a bounty pack but I'm not sure if that's the norm or not :)
Hope it goes well for you x

On my later it says expect the appointment to last at least 1hr 45 mins and expect to give up a good few vials of blood

Ohh I'm so glad I asked I thought I'd only be 10 mins. Thanks ladies xx

If its your first appointment with the MW and you are not yet 12 weeks or near that then it will be a brief chat and advice. Although my first appointment I got bloods did because I was feeling rotten. I was only in like 15 minutes in total.

Your booking appointment is your 12 week appointment which can take anything up to an hour.

Hi ladies so first appointment lasted an hour an half... Lots of questions and forms. Urine sample, 3 viles of blood and blood pressure etc ... It was very exciting xx

A bit longer than necessary Id have thought for a urine sample and blood test....

Spose if you had alot of questions or they wanted to give you some information.

I was in and outta there, I knew I wasnt getting to see or hear baby just yet so I was just looking forward to my booking!

xxxx

To be honest I didn't have any questions for them. It was the booking appointment so the had pretty much a booklet of questions that they had to go through. Explained about the scan to check for Down's syndrome etc. I got my folder that I need to keep with me at all times etc .... They said its standard that first appointment takes that long and to allow 1hour for every mw appointment there after. Got my 16week appointment booked in. And have to phone on Friday for the date for my dating scan but she said in West Yorkshire they do dating scan anytime from 8 weeks so hoping to get booked in straight away xx

Oh I'm west yorks too! Had dating scan at 12 weeks at the lgi ;-)

In my area I phoned surgery when I found out I was expecting and they booked a midwife appointment at around 8 weeks. The appointment like others have said lasted around 1hr they ask tons of questions, do weight, bloods and urine. I think it was here they talked about Down syndrome and other screening. All the info was written in the folder that your meant to take with you to all your future appointments.
At 12 weeks I had just had a scan.

It varies so differently I think between areas and even hospitals.
