First IVF Scan....

I have Pcos and had my first scan today after 4 days on Gonal F. I had 19 follicles on my right side and 21 on my left. Petrified of Ohss. No idea what is normal for someone with pcos
Any ideas? Xx

Hi Jade, firstly I am not sure as I haven't had my IVF yet. It does sound a lot but surely they would have said at your scan?

It depends what size they are too. I have had IUI scans and I think they only told me the good size ones. I over-responded to Clomid on my first cycle and had eight good sized follicles plus smaller ones (I have polycystic ovaries too). I am not sure if it counts as OHSS but I felt awful when I ovulated - hot, sweaty, in and out of consciousness, feeling faint, cramps.

Your follicles might be tiny though and may not all be released. If you are concerned then I would check with your clinic. Xxx

I had Iui 9 days ago and 3days after became very bloated and uncomfortable, went back to clinic Monday and they confirmed I have mild OHSS. Think I must have been sensitive to the hcg. Like phoenixgirl said they might have told you all of them, at my scan they told me all the measurable ones (5) and then said lots of little ones!

Found out today I have full on PCOS, not just polycystic ovaries as had been told previously (which I suspected). I expect you have one or two larger ones and loads of smaller ones xxx

I had loads of follicles when swimming but most didn't get big enough for a mature egg. I have pco and high any so was on the short protocol and low dose final f - what are you on? Make sure you stink at least 3 litres of water a day, I drank at least 4, and lots of protein xx

I'm on the short protocol too- 112.5 gonal f since last Thursday- so been on that 7 days so far, and started cetrotide on Monday - that one hurts

My scan today showed 42 follicles- although only 15/16 are measuring big. My blood test showed today that I need to lower my dose of gonal f so took 100 tonight.
Back again Friday and they told me it's likely that egg collection will be Monday. They explained about my high risk of ohss and that I may have to have the embryos frozen and put back in at a later date gutted to say the least!
She said they look at a few factors tho so hoping it doesn't come to that.
I mentioned about drinking lots of water and she said it doesn't prevent ohss- only helps if I was to get it as you become dehydrated. She also mentioned protein too- I need to read up what food contain a lot of protein lol? Red meat? Eggs?

So scared about egg collection x

Try not to worry too much, I had mild ovhss and I nearly ended up in A&E the pain was so bad!! I wonder if that is why mine did not work as I was still painful on day of transfer, but I had 20 eggs collected so they were all over or 17mm so u are still ok. I felt the same about having to wait but u don't want to waste any embryos!! Take codeine instead of paracetamol for pain relief as I founf that much better.

Oh no
I've read some horror stories- should stay of Google really!
What were your symptoms? Just so I know what to look out for.

As you say I'd rather not waste any and wait if they recommend it. Might book a last minute getaway or something just to relax.

I'll be awake during egg collection just sedated so will be like a drunk feeling apparently. At least I'll be able to hear how many eggs they're getting as they're going along

I was just sedated too but they use propofol ( well at my clinic) so it is a sedation but it's heavy sedation so I think u will still be unaware of what is going on..

I was just really sore and very bloated, the day after egg collection was the worst for me, just rest loads.

When is ur egg collection?

Don't worry Hun I think most people are fine and proper ovhss is rare xx

I'm due for egg collection Monday. Ahhhhh!

But they knew I'd be a risk of OHSS- ive been on metformin for just over a month and on a low dose of gonal f compared to some women I've read about.

I think my mind will be at rest after Friday's scan- she also said I would change what I trigger with- I have something f being with O sat in my fridge ready but that could be changed to also prevent OHSS. It's all so scary.

I'm beginning to feel bloated now. The thought of having to do Cetrotide again in the morning makes me want to cry I think as my stomach is getting more tender and bloated then the worse the injections are getting
Wish it was all over soon x

Awww, Jade xxx We are all at risk of OHSS but very few people get it so please try not to worry xxx

Just a thought - have you tried acupuncture? It will help relax you and help your insides too. Even my doctor recommended it xxx

You'll proper trigger with pregnyl rather than ovitrelle which I did. Still drink lots of water beforehand, you'll get a lot more dehydrated if you're not already hydrated if you know what i mean, I'm sure it helped me. I was very sedated during EC and I was worried as I have a weirdly positioned ovary but it was totally fine. Sore and uncomfortable for a few days after though so take it easy. I hope it all goes ok xx

Egg collection is fine, the stuff they gave me knocked me out, can't remember what they gave but wasn't anaesthetic, I came round very quickly after. Wishing you lots of luck xx

Good luck jade you'll be fine, egg collection scared the life out of me but as Lisey said it was absolutely fine, I had heavy sedation and next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. X good luck. Xx

Thanks ladies
It all went well- felt some pain during so they put more meds in my cannula thingy and that helped!
I took a tablet which helped me to relax and they also used local to numb inside which helped thing too!
Managed to get 18 eggs! Really pleased about that!
Today and tomorrow morning will drag until we get that all important call x
