First GP Appointment

Hi Ladies,

Hopefully you’ll be able to help me. I was under the impression that once you had a positive pregnancy test result, you’d phone the GP to arrange your first appointment. Here they would do some blood tests and confirm your pregnancy. However after reading a bit online, as HPTs are so accurate these days, they don’t bother with the blood tests and instead just ask a few questions, and then refer you to midwifery. Is that right? HPTs are coming through strong now and no sign of AF, but really thought a professional would confirm it lol? Thanks in advance! Xxx

Hey Chloe!

I did go to a GP the day after I had my positive pregnancy test and even though he's seen both of my HPTs he did one during my consultation and sent me in for bloods. He referred me to a midwife after as well, so I'm not 100% sure if going to the GP is necessary but it did ease my mind having it confirmed with blood tests. So it can't hurt to make an appointment xx

Hi Chloe, when I got my bfp I phoned the doctors surgery for an appointment but they weren’t interested in seeing me, just gave me the number for the community midwives to ring them to make first booking appointment, never had to do a pregnancy test or bloods with anyone which I thought was strange! Depends what nhs trust you are under as to how they do it, I’ve found everywhere is very different x

I didn't have bloods or a pregnancy test with the GP - she just took my word for it!! If I remember right she did my blood pressure and asked me a few questions then I just booked in with the midwife.

I think it’s different around the country. With my son I made an appointment with the GP and he when I got there and I told him what it was for, he said if I did a home refinance test and it was positive, then it’s positive and you’re pregnant. That’s it’s really. He did a urine test while I was there but he said I just needed to ask for a maternity pack from Reception, fill in the referral form and the midwife would contact me in a few weeks for my first appointment.
So with this pregnancy, I just went straight for a form from Reception, and same process.

Might be worth calling your GP and asking the protocol but it’s likely self referral xx

Depends on the GP your with. My GP asks for you to come in to do a urine test to confirm pregnancy, they won't do bloods unless there is a reason to doubt the test. Then your referred on to the maternity services for the remainder of your care.

However, my sister works at a GP just up the road from mine and they don't ask to see you. Then just give you the maternity number over the phone so you can ring them yourself!

Thanks for all your replies, so helpful! I called my GP and yep they just gave me the number for the midwife! What can I expect from my first appointment? Also I don’t want to tell work yet until I’m a bit further along, but not sure I’ll be able to do the appointment outside of work time by the sounds of it...

My first appointment entailed filling out loads of paperwork! The go through things like family medical history of you and your partner, previous pregnancies, general health, they'll work out due date, take blood pressure, urine test, height and weight. They'll also book you in for your 12 week scan. All in all your first appoint can take up to an hour.

As for work, if it had to be in working hours you could fib and tell them it's for a GP appointment? But in all honesty you should be able to tell management and have they keep it quite. They shouldn't be sharing your information, and it's always better to be safe at work, your boss will be able to look at risk assessments etc.

I didn’t even see a GP. I had to make an appointment with the midwife who then didn’t do any tests at all.

I’d only had my HPTs up until an early scan.

Thank you ladies, that’s all so helpful! What a lovely bunch instead of phoning I filled out an online form, and it said they can take up to 5 working days to get back to you. So just waiting for someone to email/call me to set up the first appointment, hopefully they’ll be able to do it at a time when I’m not in work or when I can just leave a bit earlier so I don’t raise any suspicions lol! Just torn between wanting to give my boss as much notice as possible but also when I’m in a safer stage of the pregnancy if you see what I mean!
