I was sent for a routine appointment with consultant as it's my 5th and I want a home birth. No previous complications or anything but 2 of my babies (first and 4th) were only 6.5 lb.

To start with consultant was fine, said great history, no issues this time why am I even there? Then I asked for home birth and bam!! Suddenly I need 3 extra scans. Last baby was too small why was it not picked up. If this one is small i need to go in for continuous fetal monitoring throughout the birth. And if baby isn't small then I can have home birth but probably not because I will have a "weak womb" after 4 previous births so will probably bleed a lot. Midwives don't give you a regular for home birth so if I bleed and get rushed to hospital they won't be able to get a canular in my veins because of blood loss so wouldn't be able to help me!

So I have gone from healthy and all good to low birth weight and bleed out in a 5 min conversation. I came out and just cried in the toilets.

I'm happy to have the extra scans but now I'm worrying about the babies size and everything else.

I know it's their job to be cautious but really felt he was just trying to scare me to put me off home birth.

I have been on a fatal monitor before and the thought of an entire Labour like that is terrorfying. I like to keep very mobile . So...on a mission to make a fat baby. How do you fatten up a baby? Lol

Hi greenflowers, sorry your going through this. I am 11+3 with baby number 5 too and I seen the consultant last week. Needless to say I feel similar to you he put the fear of God in me. I haemorraged with number 4 and had emergency section after 3 normal births. On one hand he was telling me I could have a vaginal birth as I had given birth naturally 3 times and on the other the risks were high and I am high risk of bleeding again.
So I walked out petrified!!!
I hope you get the home birth you want. I have been doing lots of reading and have read the risks are higher 5 plus. But then read lots of ladies stories where they have been told similar to you so have a little look on the larger family forum's xxx

Hi i've had 8 babies, my consultant scared me on number 5 but its honestly not as bad as they make out.
There is a higher risk of bleeding but it doesn't mean it will happen.
Drs don't like home births and will always try to discourage you but you are free to make your own desicion. Make contact with the home birth midwife team in your area and discuss this with them and im sure they will be able to give you some reasurance.
Remember just because a Doctor says its the best option at the end of the day it is your decision they can't tell you what to do.

Mummymoreton do you have any links to the bigger family forums please?

I will do some research myself. I think my midwife anticipated this. She told me if consultant said no she would do it anyway she doesn't care. She said she lives near me and will come whenever to deliver which was really nice. Also we are only 20 mins away from the hospital of something goes wrong. As for what the consultant said about not having a cannula in my hand. If that is really an issue I'm sure midwife could put one on me as a precaution. Hubby said midwives last time had them laid out ready but never used them.

Got 20 week scan Friday and seeing midwife Monday. I'll let you know what happens. Thank you so much for your replies.
