My boyfriend and I just got engaged. We were planning to get married before we found out I was pregnant and now we want to wait to get married until after the baby is due (I'm only 6 week gone). If we're not married can we still put my bf's surname on the birth certificate? are there any problems with doing this we should know about, does it affect passports or benefits or anything like that?

You should have no problem. We're not married and it was easy peasy. Same for child benefit and tax credits. For registering it's easiest if he goes with you to do it otherwise you'll need to fill out official forms (statutory declaration of paternity).

Where we live they will not put partners on the certificate if they aren't with you. But they have no issues whatsoever about not being married. All they did say was if you get married after baby is registered, we need to go back and get her re-registered!

OH and I aren't married. As long as you go together to register the birth there isn't a problem.

Exactly the same here, so you should be fine to take your boyfriend with you and have him on the birth certificate then just re-register your child once your married :D x
