I have a pregnancy journal and then a matching baby's first year journal and both have space to put in a family tree. I've searched online for guidelines as to how to do this (as prefereably I'd like to type it up and print/stick it in) but can't find anything. I'm ok with basics, i.e my parents had us three kids etc and their parents were X and X but how do I go about things like marriage, divorce or something? Any hints/tips/webiste links etc appreciated! TIA xx

genes reunited is pretty good and then when you print it out it looks quite good. There is also a programme that you can buy called family tree maker but it is quite expensive and I would suggest this only if you were gonna go that bit further and actually research your family tree.

Thanks I'll try Genes Reunited and see what I come up with on that.
Mum's a whizz at these things (she's found countless long lost aunts etc) but she's not home to ask!! :wall:

If you buy the guardian newspaper today it has a really good free guide to researching your family tree

Thanks for the hints/tips etc ladies. I do know my family tree, it's a real interest of my mothers and she's gone back more generations than I care to think about, found numerous long lost aunts etc but what I'm struggling to do is add on the lines for marraige (is that the lines that look like the = sign?) and then divorce and remarriage so I can add additional kids, i.e. half sibblings etc - how do you do that? Confusing. My FIL is coming over this afternoon to help me complete his side of the family with dates of births, middle names and things but the tree I have from my maternal side is second to none! Just getting confused with the whole how you show links between people thing.

I mean mum + dad = 3 children type thing is easy. It's the adding in of half sibblings who had a different father after divorce etc I'm finding hard. How do you show divorce/remariage on a chat and adding in the children etc from that marriage?

Nicola, you should be able to do that on the genes re-united one. My Dad has done his and his shows 1st wifes and siblings and then 2nd wives and their siblings as well as stepchildren, does get a bit confusing though as his gggrandfather had 2 wifes and about 16 children that we've traced so far!!!!

good luck

even family tree maker is rubbish at handling unusual relationships - it just adds them each side of the central person

this is what mine looks like when I tell it that me and Dans father are no longer together
