Im expressing and was at one point getting 50-60ml total from both boobs twice a day but now lucky if get 20ml from both and worried that its only foremilk now as very watery...I express for 30mins but time them around lil miss so morning cud be anything from 5am-10am and evening from 5pm til 10pm - could this be why? I have to wait until she's napping to do it and cant really do longer than 30mins but concerned that milk will dry up really fast this way? Also the drop seems to have coincided with my first period since birth (which coincidentally lasted almost 2wks!) could this be why? She isnt refusing it so obviously not giving off a poor taste but is it benefitting her?

It is meant to get more watery
You need to do it more often id say
If theres no demand you won't supply it x

Same is happening to me, I was getting 3oz per side and now I can barely get 1oz from each side. It's because I'm not doing it enough, I've dropped from 4-5 times a day to just twice. You need to do it over 8 times a day and for me that's just not sustainable x

thanks guys,

Belfa, I'm pleased to see someone else with same problem. I understand the supply/demand aspect but it just isn't sustainable, I tried really hard to do 3 x per day and couldn't sustain that so hence why doing twice...

MrsS143 - when you say meant to get more watery, does that mean hindmilk is watery whereas foremilk thicker? thought it was other way round? which is best for her or is combo better?

Im not sure about specifically when you get the sweet stuff to the fatty

But as weeks go on im sure it thins out overall ?

Colostrum

During the first days after the birth a woman produces special milk that looks thick, sticky and yellowish. It is only in very small amounts, but is just perfect for your new baby.
This special milk is called colostrum and contains large quantities of antibodies and growth factors. It enhances the development of the baby’s gastro-intestinal tract and its anti-infective agents act like a first immunization.

Colostrum has a laxative effect which helps the baby to pass the meconium (the first stool) and helps to prevent neonatal jaundice by clearing the bilirubin from the gut.

Transitional Milk

During the following two weeks, the milk increases in quantity and changes in appearance and composition. The immunoglobulins and protein contents decrease whereas fat and sugar contents increase. At this time, the breasts may feel full, hard and heavy. This normal engorgement of the mother’s breasts – sometimes referred to as „coming-in“ of the milk – can be alleviated by frequent feedings.

Mature Milk

Mature milk looks thinner and more watery than cow's milk which might be sometimes confusing. But it contains all the nutrients needed for healthy development of the baby. Breastmilk is never „too thin“. Mature milk changes during the length of a single feed to exactly suit the needs of a baby.

The milk that flows at the beginning of a feed is low in fat and high in lactose, sugar, protein, vitamin, minerals and water. As the feed goes on, the milk changes to contain more fat and less sugar.

Id imagine by now having seen your ticker you should have mature milk
So sounds like you are just getting the foremilk it seems but not sure x

thanks mrsS143 that makes me feel loads better, never heard of mature milk before...so long as what little I produce is good for her as she'll get the fat etc from the cow & gate...thanks for all your info...

Realistically any is better than none
But you risk drying up if not done enough x

To up your supply I was advised to express at least once between 12am and 6am. I have started doing this and it has definate helped. I just use my manual pump (electric too noisy) for about 10 minutes on each breast.

My problem is that I am still getting plenty from my left breast but the right only gives me about 30ml per time. I expressing about 4 times per day if I can.

Good luck. Any of your milk is of benefit to her though so keep at it. X

Thanks guys, I know there is a risk of it drying up but can't manage any more frequent...babyscotcher, I often do my first express between 5 and 6am as thats when lil miss generally settles after first feed or is still waking up for the day...I aim to continue til she's at least 4months old so thats another 7weeks...then I'll revisit it again...

Your period returning will have a temporary affect on your supply however I'm afraid to say expressing twice a day at this stage just isn't enough to sustain a good supply. I expressed for my premature son then went on to bf for 4 weeks, when we stopped bf, I expressed to relieve discomfort and it was literally all foremilk-watery with a blueish tinge. So it could be because your body is getting ready to stop producing.

To help up your milk supply, you need to express more and eat loads of oaty foods. Fenugreek also shoots your supply through your supply through the roof.

My baby is exclusively breast fed and I have started expressing so I can make his porridge etc up with breast milk as he has a suspected cows milk allergy so can't have formula. I am really sloppy and express once every few days (but lo is still bf) and I now get 150ml from one breast easily and about 15ml is thick fatty milk once it has separated. I'm not sure if this is normal or not as I have battled with a foremilk hind milk imbalance before but thought I'd offer my experience.
