Just looking for any experiences. I'm not a heavy exerciser but I do like to go to hatha yoga classes, maybe 1/2 a week. Does anyone have any experience of carrying on with this sort of thing? Currently I feel more than well enough but I know there's plenty going on in my body behind the scenes that I need to be mindful of. I read that some poses aren't suitable but obviously I don't want to discuss with the teacher as it's so early. I'm inclined to just lose the rest of the block of classes I've paid for just to be on the safe side but would love to hear any thoughts in case I'm over thinking it.

Hi Moomin, welcome an congrats.
I go to quite a range of gym classes, and I've spoken to my gp, midwife and gym instructors about it. I felt it was important to say to gym instructors, partly because i worry that morning sickness could get the better of me mid class. I swore the instructors to secrecy/discretion, and definitely don't want to be singled out as pregnant until I'm ready for the news to be public.
I was doing a lot of high intensity stuff, so I have cut the most intense classes, but otherwise you don't really need any modification at this stage of pregnancy. Advice is to carry on doing what you normally do, just not doing anything so strenuous you're completely out of breath (Im finding I tire more easily anyway, so def cant give it 100%)

In terms of yoga, most styles should be fine, but you just need to be careful with (or not do) inversions, and hot yoga is a NoNo. I had a strong hot yoga practise before, so I'm really missing that. From my experience of hatha, you should be totally fine. Its only in tri 2 that you need to modify (e.g. not good to lay on your back for long periods). Exercise and meditation are so good for you and bub, so do keep it up!

I appreciate it's news you want to keep a lid on for now, but I recommend going early for a quiet word with your teacher - she'll be able to give you subtle advice and modifications to keep you safe.

Happy tri1

xx

Thanks MrsBunny.

I've never done hot yoga but I'd heard that was a big no. As you know, hatha doesn't exactly get you out of breath but I've read so much conflicting information about modifications. Some basically say don't start anything new but if you did it before then it's fine. Others suggest I'd need so many modifications it would hardly be worth going!! As you say, I don't want to be singled out. It also feels a bit much to be telling people at this stage as well. Will see how I feel over the next few days. I'm sure I'll soon know what feels right.

I did yoga in my first pregnancy, the teacher guided me through the poses I wouldn't be able to do and how I could adapt them to still be stretching etc, just in slightly different positions. I loved it and I'm looking to start another class as that one folded a little while ago, so I need to get back into it. X

I was doing yoga for a while but Work got in the way so haven’t been in a long time. When I was going though my instructor would usually say if you’re on your period or pregnant don’t do this or don’t stretch too much. I never thought much about it at the time but realised that some students must have quietly told her beforehand. I think it’s worth mentioning at the start of the class but say you don’t want it to be public knowledge. Has your instructor got an email address? You could always email them to ask? I know that some instructors won’t tesch yoga to pregnant women but only from about the second trimester onwards. This is usually because they would have to have done an extra training course for this or they don’t have insurance to cover pregnant women, in case of an injury. There are many pregnant yoga classes though and I would love to join one when I’m further along

I'm also keen to join pregnancy classes when I'm further along - it's just telling people now that's troubling me. I want to carry on doing it but after trying for so long, I don't want to be taking any needless risks but it just feels a bit much to tell others about it as it doesn't feel real yet. Think I may just have to take it easy. It will only be a for a few weeks but I think I feel more comfortable that way.
