As some of you may know, Eva was sitting Breech for almost all of my pregnancy so OH and I decided on an elective c-section over ECV. I have to say that I am so SO glad we went that route, I know many people tell many horror stories about C-section births (I know because I read them all and freaked out so much) but I wouldn't change our birth for anything.

We went up to the hospital for around 7/7.30 am on Wednesday morning (09/01). Straight up to Labour ward to be checked in, spoke to anesthetists assistant nurse, midwife and the anesthetist himself whilst getting paper work checked/finished off and all the usual obs done (BP/baby heartbeat/temp etc). At the hospital we delivered at there are 3 section times in a day: 0915, 1015 and 1115. We don't find out which one you are allocated until the day.

After getting everything sorted we were told by the anesthetist that we were up first (YAS!) But this was short lived as the person across from us kicked up a fuss about wanting to be first, so we settled for second (really didn't bother me that much as I was insanely calm). I had been freaking out the night before and only had an hours sleep so was expecting to be so bad on the actual day. Whilst waiting got changed into my sexy hospital night dress with bare bum slash and OH got kitted out in his scrubs (and pretended to be a doctor for a while). Lady before me's section was running a little late so we didn't get along to theatre until about 1030. Had to walk along barefoot and bumflashing but it was empty so didn't matter.

OH made to wait outside the theatre for a few mins whilst I went in and got to sit up on the bed to hug a pillow. Got given local anesthetic injection to the hand before they put in the drip for IV fluids and antibiotics. Didn't hurt a bit (and I HATE needles). Best feeling ever with the cold rush of fluids up your arm (especially after 'fasting' for 8 hours). Then had to slouch down and got given another jab of local in the back before spinal tap was given, felt a small pain like someone hitting a nerve at the dentists in my back and a few wee pushes but nothing painful or long lasting. The effects of spinal were almost immediate, felt warm and heavy from waist down, had everyone in stiches because I was enjoying it so much.

They then lay you down on the operating table, do a cold spray test to make sure spinal worked fully, get you to lay with your arms out so you would look like you were being crucified if you could view yourself from the ceiling. Catheter inserted (will stay in for 6hours as its a planned c-section). BP armband on at all times and the table tilts a little to the left so feels like you could fall off which is odd. Painted my belly with the sterilizing brown stuff. They then put up the big blue curtain and bring OH in to sit by your head.

They had started before OH had even sat down properly as I immediately felt action behind the partition. No pain just tugging and jiggling. I had a med student in watching the procedure and being asked questions etc so he was pretty much describing the procedure outloud (tried my best NOT to listen). Got crazy shakes because of the drugs anyway so was preoccupied with that. After about 10 minutes and a strange sucking noise my gorgeous baby girl began to wail the house down. She was weighed and then shown to me and handed to daddy :) Told she had done a poo and pee as soon as she was born too, so proud. Took them about 30 minutes to stitch me back up but didn't even notice time too busy staring at my gorgeous girl in disbelief!

Transferred to a bed and taken to the labour recovery ward where I managed to get a little feed with Eva and we had some bonding time as a new family. After about an hour and some amazing tea and toast (and a wee freshen up by the midwives) we were taken up to the Maternity wards :)

Given injections for blood thinning and some mixture of painkillers and was all ready and set for early visiting hours. Safe to say everyone was smitten with her. I personally found that I was asking to get out of bed. Got the catheter taken out around 5pm and was up and walking around straight away. I personally have found the recovery process really easy, able to pick up baby no problem and go the loo myself etc.

Got home on Friday 11/01/2012 after being able to establish breast feeding and having baba signed off by pediatrics as good to go :) Still got a cocktail of pain killers for when it's bad and 4 more blood thinning injections that OH has to administer but I feel like normal. Midwife will be out to see us on Saturday and I guess I will find out when they take the dressing off.

All in all: I found a planned c-section relaxing, easy and painless way to bring my daughter into the world. I have found the recovery process at times challenging (by certain limitations and a longish hospital stay) but all in all not as bad as I was expecting from what other people have told me (so far). Only thing Im finding painful at the moment is breast feeding.

Anyway: Here is a pic of my princess Eva Kornelia Hayton born at 11.06am on 09/01/2013 weighing 6lb9oz

Really positive birth story ! Have me dead excited for mine on Wednesday ! Hope your all well she is gorgeous xo

Sarah... It's so lovely to read of such a positive c-sec experience.

The woman in the bed next to me at the moment has been here since Thursday morning, and all she does is moan about the pain, and worry that her baby has an ugly nose... (Wtf, right??).

Sounds like you've had a lovely experience hun, and look at the prize at the end! How gorgeous is she!!

Congratulations xx

What a fantastic birth story! Brings back so many memories because I remember my 2 sections being exactly the same, from the open bum slash in the gown to the pain free recovery :D

Your baby girl is beautiful! huge congratulations xxx

It's always lovely to hear a positive story!!!

Your little daughter is just beautiful - well done!

xxxxxxx

Congratulations she's beautiful and I'm pleased it all went well x

Congratulations. She's a beauty! :) After reading so many awful C-sec stories (my own fault for googling) its really good to read a positive one.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, i have been terrified of having a c-section and you have really settled my mind. Congratulations on your beautiful little lady, you were amazing!! xx

Thanks guys. Just trying to get used to being home with her and OH now and all the mw visits. Managed to have first blood thinner injection administered by OH and that went really well too :)

It was an odd sensation when they pulled her out the intense relief shoots up to your chest and feels like lungs could fully expand for first time in months. I know eveyones experience is different but just going in witha positive attitude thinking about the beautiful baby at the end and that it wikl all be over in an hour! Good luck withd ur sections tho :) xxx

What a lovely story I'm so glad for you that you felt you really made the right choice and I can tell that your birth was a very positive experience. Your little girl is just gorgeous xx

Lovely birth story hun. Massive congrats on ur beautiful baby girl. Xxxx

Thank u so much for letting me read this, you have put my mind at ease and calmed me down. What a brilliant start your lovely little girl had to the world and its nice that you could get on with things without too much pain. I think it's just the noises and the initial theatre bit before baby is born that scares me but when he is here I am gonna try and be strong and just focus on the little man.

So did u feel the spinal or was it just the jab before they put the spinal in that u felt? Was u ok bending down and standing up straight?

Yeah I read about those shakes and I get them when I go into hospital anyway which I'm not lookiing forward to but hey ho! Just hope I don't chuck baby off me with them haha.

Hope you both are doing well now and settled in. Xxxx

I felt a a pin prick that was the local anesthetic being put in then like a quick nerve twitch when they put the spinal in but it wasnt sore at all really, and i was up all night the night before worryign and stressing because i have a major phobia of needles. I honestly can say it was so good and the sensation when the drugs kick in is amazing lol.

It helps when u have a nice team in the OR with u who can make u laugh and keep u calm.

I have had no problems bending down and standing up, was up and about 6/7 hours after the actual op. Dont get me wrong u need to pace yourself and dont be afraid to buzz that mw in to change a nappy at 5am lol u need rest most. Laughing, sneezing and coughing have been fine too but i keep a pillow at hand when i can just incase i need to apply some pressure.

Only uncomfy part is when they take the big plaster dressing off feels like youre getting an unwanted wax down there lol. Do you know when youre scheduled to go in.? Xxx
