Epidural question

You will so not care, any needle is a piece of cake compared to contractions. I honestly couldn't feel mine.

Sorry to chip in, but does the epidural hurt going in? Worse than having blood taken? I suppose if I feel I really need it I wont care about an epidural. I want to try on gas and air, but I dont want to rule out the posibility of an epidural if I really dont feel I can cope.

No.
You feel a little sting as the anaesthetic is injected, then tingling legs (but not pain), then bliss! x

By the time you want an epidural, the contractions will be that full on you won't feel a thing. Literally the only thing I felt was cold. The tube was taped up my back and secured at my shoulder so it could be topped up easily and it felt like a cold trickl running down my back lol

Round here I think it's around 4cm before you can have one. I had two spinal blocks (neither for labour) but they are not at scary as the stories as I really didn't want them
But being put out wasn't an option for me medically! I would have one this time round but depends if my labour progresses as fast as my first then I might not have time!

I too asked to give birth where the drugs are - but still undecided on whether I want an epidural. Wait and see I guess!!!

They gave me one at 2-3cm but I'd been labouring for about 15 hours with no progress I was exhausted x

I had my epidural at 6cms and it was bliss after that :) x

While on the topic of pain relief I recommend diamorpine. Beautiful stuff and made my horrendous night lovely :) lol

Id like to have vbac next time but Im definitely going for pain relief!

I had some of the diamorphine too after my section made me itch like hell but did take the pain away x also had a spinal this time from nothing which was different the local to numb back was more painful than the spinal itself x

I had diamorphine and it was brilliant , I always think ppl should try other pain relife options before going for an epidural xxx

I was only offered paracetamol/codeine up until 4cm dilated so don't assume you will get one straight away.

And be prepared that they will possibly try to talk you out of it to start with. Or get you to try other things. For me having an epidural meant transferring from the lovely MW led low dependency suite to high dependency with the monitoring/strapped to the bed. As it turned out I didn't get a choice because my cervix took too long to dilate and I had to go there to have intervention to speed it up anyway, so I thought I might as well have the epidural.

It's funy because I didn't want any drugs before I went into labour.

I ended up with THE LOT. The only one I didn't get was diamorphine, I don't think they offered that at my hospital.

oh, and also.

The epidural didn't work. I had to go to theatre for rotational forceps and I insisted on a spinal block as the epidural didn't take the pain away. Spinal blocks rock btw... though they ask you to push into your bottom when you can't feel anything below your tits which is quite weird.

So it was the worst pain relief for me.

The thing that worries me about pethidine or diamorphine is that if you have it and you don't like the feeling it gives, it's in there.
Some people feel really disorientated by it or a bit disorientated and that worries me x

Lol I want to have a positive experience not scared into never having more kids lol

If you mean a positive experience as in no pain then yes, assuming you aren't unlucky like me and it not working, an epidural will give you that.

It will mean you are stuck on a bed for a very long time though, with wires sticking out of you and a catheter in. Also it could possibly slow down your labour and it will increase the chance of them having to intervene with forceps/ventouse because you can't feel when to push properly. You are also at risk of bad headaches afterwards.

Not wishing to frighten you, though you should be aware of the full picture before you decide.

Best of luck

I feel like that I saw obem with the midwife who had diamorphine and she looked out of it... I don't fancy that. I'm hoping to have no pain relief only a tens machine xx
