Hello

Tom is now 3 months old, and the last week has been waking every hour for his dummy.

I have tried to take it away from him but he then constantly cries till he has it back, then an hour later cries cause he keeps dropping it. :wall:

as soon as i give it to him he will sleep for another hour and so on.........

i was wondering if anyone else has this problem and if so how did you over come in as i need

thanks

Yup, I posted about this yesturday, or the day before... Its pants aint it!!

Tho my LO only wakes once mabey for the dummy between 8pm and 5am...

So  for you!!!

I am going to try cold turkey with the dummy. I have got him off to sleep but a bit worried as to what i can do when he wakes :-S

if its just a case of the dummy falling out the mouth thread it threw a muslin cloth that will weigh it so it wont fall out, we had to do this with thomas when he had a dummy as hes got no suck because of the cleft it works a treat,
plus the muslin is very breathable so you dont have to worry about them suffocating
xx

If he is 3 months you should be able to take it away fine. Maybe a bit of fussing for a day but he won't have memory of it as such yet as he is too young. Its past 4-5 months he'll start to remember it and miss it.

Truthfully, when you wake in the morning, throw it out and be done with it. You may have a crappy 12-24 hours but after that he should be fine without it.

Does he suck his fingers for comfort at all? Let him do that if you can.

My LO has a dummy for colic and to stop him comfort sucking but we avoided the dummy at night for sleeping as we didn't want to be tied to him waking and needing that comfort to go back to sleep.

Do you have a mobile or music? Something soothing. We use the Tiny Love mobile and it plays for 20 mins and has a light on it and it comforts our LO and he goes off back to sleep just fine.

i,ve not let Tom have his dummy since 3pm yesterday, we have had a lot of crying but he did once he went of to sleep at 730 go through til 345 i then gave him a bottle and he woke at 7.15 so a much better night sleep.

he is now crying again for it but i will try to continue without it as i know he can sleep without it

Well done!!

Let me know how it goes!! :)

Soon as my LO is out of our room then I will be ditching the dummy, as if he winges then he wont wake OH up!

As for the mobile thing... I'll have exactly the same problem, if he needs that to sleep... its no better if I have to get up to turn a mobile on, as if I have to get up to put the dummy in!

he got himself back off to sleep again this morning, so i have decieded to throw the dummys away, that way i can not be tempted to give him it if he is screaming, as i no that he can get himself of to sleep.

i feel great for doing it, and it was no where as near as bad as i thought it would be last night.

:) Sounds great. I think throwing them away is fine as he really won't 'miss' having a dummy.

The thing is, once past a certain age the dummy sticks in the memory so then it usually becomes much harder to get rid of once they get past that point. I prefer getting up to turn the mobile on if needed than I do to put a dummy in. Our LO often doesn't even need the mobile to get back to sleep and gradually we'll phase that out and just go with music (once he can pull himself up and reach the mobile).

Wooo!!! :cheer: Well done :)

Soon as LO's reflux is under control I'll ditch them too...! Hope it goes as well as yours did! :D

Sherlock - Thanks, I really need to ditch them before he rmbrs them, like you say. One month to get this reflux really taken care of, so he dont need to use it to keep the acid down. Then i'll chuck em in the bin and put up with the day or two of moaning, but then he'll forget what hes even moaning about lol!

that time seemed harder to get him off to sleep, it seemed like he was crying for ages but i did 2 mins crying and 2 mins holding and it was all in all 10 minutes, it just seemed longer than it was.

my other kids are walking about with their fingers in their ears

ooooo yes my son wakes god knows how many times for me to plop his dummy back in his mouth. my only advice to you is ive gotten use to practically getting up still asleep and popping it back in and hardly remembering in the morning how many times ive done it!

the most annoying thing is when hes crying for his dummy and doesnt realise hes the one who pulled it out and he is tightly grasping it in one hand and frantically waving it around. then gives me a death stare as if to say im the one who took it from him!

hi, just an update, tom slept from 730-6 this morning and had a bottle and slept till 930 without a dummy, all that day he seemed calmer too.........and his wind has nearly gone, i think the dummy was making it worse

i wont say the first 24 hours was easy and there was times i nearly gave in, but im so glad i had the strength to know it was for the better...........cause last night i actually got sleep yay
