Just wondering your opinions on babies having a dummy and is it best to avoid giving one?

Any ladies breastfeeding & given a dummy and has it interfered with latching on or anything? xxx

Alyssa dosent really like any of the dummies ive tried, cba buying more to try, shes had 4 diff ones and theres only 1 that she will keep in for more than 5 mins and even thats hit or miss. she has bottles tho as i combi feed formula and bf and its never caused confusion but did make her lazy with suckling as bottles are easier to get milk from. tho she was always lazy and sleepy, thats why i combi feed.

I caved in with a dummy a couple of weeks back. The hv had said we were doing great with the breastfeeding and it wouldn't affect it.

It's not an instant hit here either. It often gets spat out.

I know it will sound thick but when do you usually give a dummy? think my little man is using my nipple as one ha
Im a bit worried bottles & dummies may undo all my hard work with bf xxx Joshua is 3 weeks old now

I have also found EVERYONE says to me ' are you going to give him a dummy?' and it niggles me so makes me more determined to not x But I just don't get what you use them 4 as if baby cries it would be for a reason right? xx

I gave Georgia a dummy from very early on - the american SIDS society recommends them from birth to lower the risk ( we have a family history of SIDS) - G has it to go to bed, or anytime she's likely to go to sleep - e.i. in the car or pram.

If i think she's using me as a dummy - i pop her off - put in the dummy - if she just wants comfort she keeps the dummy - if she's still hungry she complains.

Just now she has it more often because shes teething and is too little to hold teethers instead shes biting on her dummies.

Nipple confusion is actually a very rare thing, so if you wanna try i wouldnt worry too much. Will point out - a lot of people that i have spoke to dont get on well with the TT orthodontic dummies - too small for LO's to hold on to - so id steer clear of them,. xxx

I use mine to get her to sleep and sometimes if I think she's mucking about on the boob I put the dummy in instead.

I have occasionally used it before a feed while I get the Gaviscon and my feeding pillows ready etc

When I was breastfeeding Joe, he would feed continually but most of it was comfort sucking. I needed to use a dummy to give myself 10 minutes break. Sometimes he was happy to have the dummy other times he'd spit it back out so I knew he actually was hungry.

I agree he can't stand the TT ones. We use advent ones.

I've got tt ones...maybe that's why he can't keep it in! I only give it to him when he is fighting his sleep. Helps him nod off.

I use a dummy I can feel a difference if he goes from dummy to me but it's never caused enough confusion to be an issue. What I would say is I've never given a dummy because I felt he was suckling on me to much if he wants to do that I just let him because I know it'll boost my supply. I use the dummy to settle him when he's not interested in booby in a similar way to how I rocked/patted/walked about with my 1st son who never took a dummy. I've never read someone on here complaining that a dummy stopped them feeding either but that's not to say it doesn't happen I guess.

We use avent too TT were useless

i never used a dummy with thomas as he never needed one but with james we started using one at about 3 weeks, turns out it was a god send as e has reflux lol, we use it when he's sleepy as he likes something to suck on and can't use my finger all the time he also like it after a feed just to settle his tummy once he's done he spits it out until nap time. we also found tt crap and use the avent ones plus i think they look nicer than the tt ones, james is ff but he does sometimes get confide with the dummy and the bottle though and we have to wait until he twigs which one it is xx

Lots of babies find the sucking motion quite soothing, so like others have said, sometimes they've found that baby is sucking at boob or bottle but not actually drinking. This would be a time to introduce a dummy (hate that word).

I've heard a lot of people say that it lessens the risk of SID. The sucking keeps the airway open.

Henry has TT dummies and loves them. He has them when he goes to sleep, when he uses me like a dummy, because he's teething and it also calms his colic as the sucking is soothing.

I've never had any problem with him latching.

I´ve used a dummy for some time but we had to "force" her to take it! Babies don´t know what´s good for them, and will often spit it out and get upset, but she calms down with the dummy after a while. It didn´t affect her latching at all and she seems so much calmer after we started giving her a dummy.

I've used a dummy since about 3 weeks! He is a fussy eater anyway so couldn't say if it was linked to the dummy. He tends to spit it out a lot too! Only give it to him to settle him and when he has wind as it comforts him xx

I've got Sam a dummy and I bf, he didn't like tt ones and preferred avent!
You need to persevere and scratch /tap the back of the dummy it triggers the sucking reflex. It's never effected his latch. I was determined not to give one and felt like an awful mom but it was silly feeling like that and it was a god send as sam was using me as a soother x
