I was wondering what decision you are making about whether to have the first test that gives you a probability of downs syndrome.

I've got my 12 wk scan next week (yippee!) but really in 2 minds about having the test at all, thinking not to have it. I know it's a personal decision ... Just wanted your thoughts pls! Thanks folks :)

Im having it too when have my 12 weeks (even though it means a blood test too im willing to sacrifice) as i was tested for this when i was born as mum didn't have a scan with me as they weren't the thing in those days xx

No because for me it will make no difference other than letting me know. I wud still keep the baby and therefore the risks to the test when it won't make a difference seems silly.

I do understand other people needing to know and therefore it is worth the small risk for other people. But for us it wouldn't change anything.

Xx

I will be having it as I'm an older mum  I think I would rather just be prepared x

Harrycat can I ask if it is a nuchal scan you have been offered to test for Downs? This is the test they have said to me about at the moment x

I didn't have it done. It wouldn't change anything for me, and if I got a high risk result, I would never risk the amniocentesis as it increases the risk of miscarriage. So I'd just spend my whole pregnancy worried. Whereas now my sickness has eased, I'm starting to enjoy pregnant and I don't think I'd have been able to had I got a high risk result x

Oh I thought you were talking about the amnio test. Xx

I had the blood test and the scan test but not amnio. I only had it to prepare if he did have it it would t change how much I love him cx

I've refused to have it, to me it wouldnt make no difference and if it came out as high risk i would do nothing but worry about it xx

I had it even though it wouldn't have made a difference to me keeping the baby :).

Sorry I wasn't clear I mean the nuchal test yes - so no risk to baby ... I just don't know how much it will help me as I can't imagine having a termination if u got to that stage (or having the amnio / cvs for that matter). OH would rather get the risk number though ...

It depends what you would do with the info hunnie. If the answer is nothing then is it worth doing?
For me, I already have 4 children and I have to go back to work full time as I'm the main breadwinner so it wouldn't be fair to my other children or this child if I'm not able to give it the care it needs x

I had it done because then i would have the knowledge. They dont just test for Downs. At least i would be prepared/ able to make a decision.
Good luch whatever you decide

We chose to have the Nauchal scan and the blood test, regardless of the outcome hubby and I would not have changed our mind about the pregnancy but both of us would have wanted to be prepared and armed with as much knowlegde as possible about Downs Sydrome.

We wouldnt of have an Amnio or CVS though.

xx

they don't do the nuchal scan here or the blood test :( they don't believe in selection of children...i would much like to have the option though :(

i am paying for a private nuchal scan but i can't have the blood test so....i suppose it can go either way...

The result wont make any difference to us either but I think it would be the not knowing that would worry me more than the knowing (strange I know I have always been a bit backwards in my thinking) x

I didn't have any of the tests even though I'm an older mum. Having twins who aren't identical makes things even more confusing when determining high or low risk (one could come back high risk and the other low), and I wasn't prepared to risk having the amnio done. It wouldn't have made a difference to OH or me anyway.
