Downs Syndrome

Ive discussed this with my OH last night and the midwife this morning. Although Ive decided I will keep my baby no matter what, Ive signed the papers for the tests. Id rather prepare myself knowing sooner than give birth and deal with it then along with all the other emotions. She also said if I say no to the tests now, it will be hard to book them in later on but as I did it today they will just do it all at my first scan which is good.

Wise words Cherry! Thanks, what you've said has put my mind at rest a bit x x

I think having the tests or not comes down to how you feel you would cope with a high risk result.

I decided to have the combined test because (I'm being really honest here) if I got a high risk result (more than 1/100) I would be prepared to go for the more invasive tests to know for sure, especially if the risk of Down's was greater than the risk of miscarriage from having the test (which is ~1/100 for the first 2 days and goes back to normal after) and we wouldn't continue with the pregnancy if I got a definite positive result.

If you would continue with the pregnancy with a high Down's risk then as, Cherry said, at least knowing you're high risk will give you time to accept and prepare yourself to deal with the potential eventuality of having a child with Down's.

PS - Thankfully my letter came back last friday saying that the chances of this baby having Down's were less than 1/10,000 (not impossible but very very unlikely!) so that's made me more optimistic about this little one than ever :)

hi i had blood test with my first came back 1 in 50 high risk and was 26 at the time kind of got pushed into the amino everything fine but would not have got rid of him even if he had downs. choose not to have the test with my second and wont this time either as would continue with the pregnancy anyway. the wait and worry i had with the test first round was horrible. but like everyone else has said its a very personal thing there is no right or wrong way as long as its your choice. hope this helps xx

really happy to say got my letter back from cambridge today to say our little one has less than 1 in 10,000 chance of having downs. Really pleased I had the screening now as it's one less thing to worry about :) x x

Glad your tests result came back ok hunny, such a relief :) x x

great news that results r low risk ladies xxxx

Hi everyone - I know this is a super late and very pointless response to this thread, but in case any more ladies come across it, please look up the website "future of downs" - type it into google, no spaces. You might like the information and UP TO DATE opinions it has. It helped me loads... I my DD2 has Down's syndrome and I think a lot of people have a dreadfully outdated view of what Trisomy 21 actually means these days!

The needle test your referring to is called an Amniocentesis - they would not do this routinely, only if you are considered high risk, either by age or a prior blood test or scan. Amnio's do carry a slight miscarriage risk about 1 in 100, so 1% which is still very low. They usually perform this around 16 weeks if you are considered to be in a high risk category.

I would want to do the test just so I could read up on it and be more prepared to take care of my baby when born if there was a risk for DS. I would keep my baby no matter what, so it wouldn't create any difficult dilemmas for me in that sense. I would not want to have the amniocentesis done though, because even 1% miscarriage rate is too much for me! Don't want to take any unnecessary risks, and since I would keep the baby anyway I think an Amniocentesis would be unnecessary..

I had to have the cvs test as our risk was 1 in 45. We've no found out that he is fine. Have your tests then make your choice once you know what's going on. Dont worry yourself over something that may never happen!

when i was pregnant with my youngest at the 11 week scan i was told i had 1:50 chance of him being downs syndrome, next day i had a cvs and scans done on his heart eyes and brain, i had to wait 2 weeks for the results , everything came back fine and he is a healthy happy 8 year old,
