Hi Everyone. I'm training as a Doula in Hertfordshire. I'm the mother of 3 (home births) and have attended 3 births as a Doula so far (home birth, natural breech birth and hospital caesarean). Would be keen to hear from anyone who has used a Doula or considering one.

 Welcome to the forum :)

Where are you doing your doula training?

Hi. I'm training with Developing Doulas. They're based in Norfolk and I'm based in Hertfordshire

Excellent! Good luck with that and hope you enjoy the forums :)

Oooh I just googled Doula's after your thread, no idea they existed! Sorry about that!

Really think it would be so wonderful to have one, I wish the NHS would employ them, it would take some of the pressure off midwifes as so often you hear of ones who arent actually very good at the head end stuff!

Do you mind if I ask how much people generally pay to work with one?

Hi Tiny

The NHS are now recognising the value of Doulas and we're working very closely with them and midwives to make the birthing experience the best it can be for the mother, baby and partner. The charge rates of Doulas varies, depending on service offered and location of Doula. As I'm still officially a trainee Doula, my rate is currently £200 for a "birth Doula" package. This includes:

Before Childbirth the doula will usually meet with the mother (or couple) at least once face to face, and then perhaps be available by phone or for additional meetings if necessary.
During Labour the doula is able to offer help and suggestions on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. The doula can also encourage the father to participate in the birth to a level at which he feels comfortable. The doula's most important role is to provide nurturing, continuous support and reassurance.
After childbirth the doula may follow up with a couple of postnatal visits to help the new mum settle at home with her new baby, or alternatively, the mother may decide to employ a postnatal doula for a period of 6 - 8 weeks.

There's some excellent information on the Doula UK website. Hope this helps!?

Thankyou thats really helpful, Im actually starting to think this would be a good way to spend my health in pregnancy grant!

Would a doula attend a hospital birth or is it more designed for home birth?

A Doula will attend whatever kind of birth you want. I've attended a home birth, a natural breech birth, a hospital caesarean etc. We're there to provide whatever assistance or reassurance the mother needs to make sure her birth is a positive experience.

hmph there arent many in Wales! Thanks for answering my questions!
