just thought i would share a sad experience with you.
My midwife was telling me about a lady who bought herself a doppler, one day she said the baby hadnt been moving so used her doppler to check its heartbeat because she found the heartbeat she thought everything was ok so didnt go to the doctor, sadly the baby died which could possibly have been avoided if she didnt have a doppler and gone to her doctor.
I was concidering getting one but now dont want one, as my midwife said it can be a dangerous tool if used in inexperienced hands.

That's terrible.

I decided in my first pregnancy not to get one as I was paranoid enough as it was without having to check the baby's heartbeat all the time.

Although having said that, I loved going to see my midwife and hear my little ones heartbeat, the first time I heard it, I cried, it was so amazing.

I'm not going to get one this time round either as I don't want it to add to my worry if I can't find what I'm looking for. I just what to get to the stage where I can feel my baby moving around so I know it's ok while growing inside of me. :)

I don't understand how not having used the doppler could have prevented the baby dying. Surely if a baby is going to pass on, there is nothing that can be done to prevent this?

I was thinking the same?

i think she means because she heard the heart beat she decided not to bother going to the doctors because everything was ok with just the heartbeat.. i agree though that nothing could probably have been done..

she was pretty far on in her pregnancy and the baby could have been delivered if her midwife or doctor had found the problem in time, yes there is no promise it would have survived but there was certainly a high chance.

Aw hennaly im sorry for your friend.. that must have been horrendous..

thanks but this was an experience my midwife told me about not a friend, i was talking to her about being able to buy doplers now and she was very concerned and said what a bad idea it is in inexperienced hands.

Thats so sad.

I have to say though that I bought my doppler just for the thrill of hearing my baby's heartbeat I certainly wouldn't use it to self diagnose. If I thought there was something different/wrong in my pregnancy I would call my midwife straight away.

I used my doppler throughout my whole pregnancy!! Its was the best buy out of everything I got and was great listening to my lil mans heartbeat. Sadley if the baby was going to die there is not a lot you can do about it, in the sence that your Midwife really is quite silly to suggest that the lady having a doppler was the casue of it!! seems to me that the Midwife is almost blaming her because she had a doppler! Load of C**p if im being honest. Dont let that put you off getting a doppler. If you dont feel your baby move regardless of you having a doppler you should always get checked out anyway, just to be on the safe side.

you really are missing the point, what was said was that because she used hte dopler she thought everything was ok s didnt see her doctor whereas if she hadnt had one when she thought her baby wasnt moving she would have gone to her midwife or doctor and maybe they could have found the problem and done something.

Basically jsut cos u hear the heartbeat doesnt mean everythings ok, if you feel reduced movement (later on obviously) then you should ALWAYS contact MW or hospital even if you find the heartbeat on the monitor :)

Using the doppler probably had no effect on the outcome but she should have gone to hospital and not just used the doppler as lots can be done at the hospital nowadays dependant on how far along you are

yes that pretty much says it all

Well i love my doppler. Its only really something to be used along side everything else you get told though i agree with that.

Sad story but i wouldnt let it stop me using one and would recommend them to others. Sounds like you have a cheery midwife!.. almost as good as when mine decided to tell me that it only takes one day of doing something silly at the start of the pregnancy for something like a lip or toe not to develop.. why tell me that???
