Sounds like my idea of hell!
It's such a steep learning curve when you have your first, and who knows what the birth will be like, you may not be fully recovered. Plus your hormones will be raging, you'll be bleeding, and if you're BF-ing, you'll still be in the learning stages.
I wouldn't want to go either!
As for your hubby not taking time off when the baby is born WTF???
You stay close to your mum hun, sounds like you're very close and she's the person you're going to need with you at that time
