I have a new job opportunity working with a little boy with autism. His mum knows I'm pregnant and is just worried that he may kick or hit me. I have experience working with children with autism of varying degrees but never when I've been pregnant so I know exactly what to expect. Just wondering if any of you ladies have worked with children with autism when pregnant or maybe have a child who is autistic who could give me some advice? I know this is a very sensitive subject so you can pm me if you like. Many thanks for reading xxxx

Hi, no experience myself but my cousin worked in a school with children with autism & one of them pushed her down the stairs - she didn't know she was pregnant (so the kids couldnt either) until she got to the hospital! Everything was fine with baby thankfully, but that'alter experience I can think of!! Xx

Hi, not a personal experience, but a friend of mine works at a school for autistic children, and when she became pregnant her job role changed significantly while she was pregnant, and was office based quite alot. Was obviously to do with the risk assessment they have to take.

Yea that's what I was thinking. His mum said he hits out if he's upset sometimes but I suppose there's always a risk with any child suddenly hitting out lol, the little girl I look after at the min has kicked me god knows how many times and she's not autistic xxxx

I work with children with not only autism but a range of mental and physical disability. I was kicked in the knee by a little boy just last week whilst examining him.
I think as long as you're always aware that you could be handled roughly or kicked and can sit stand defensively when needed then you'll be ok.
I try to bend over so my tummy is tucked in iykwim and so far I've only been booted in the legs and once poked in the eye x

That's really good advice thanks. I sit and stand covering my belly anyway usually as the little girl is very hyper and usually hits me by mistake all the time when playing so I don't think it will be much different really! I think his mum is just worried for me but I know from experience what to expect. Xxxx

I think you'll be fine as you are always on alert anyway iykwim x

A wee girl in my class suddenly lashes out, so I just make sure I'm on guard and the other staff know that they need to come and intervene (as obviously I have other kids to supervise, which you won't have a problem with). Definitely just be on guard and your natural protection instincts will kick in anyway xx
