Hi everone

Just got to work after seeing doctor to tell him I'm pregnant. I usually see a really nice woman, who used to be a gynaecologist however I couldn't get an appoitnment with her until 11th Dec, so I saw this man.

He was a foreign doctor and the most miserable looking and sounding doctor I've ever come across. He didn't even look at me when I walked in!!!

After reading a few pregnancy mags, got the impression that I would have a booking in appointment before the 12 week scan???? He said that they do all of that at your 12 week scan?? Please help, he was so uninformative!! :? :?

Also, he didn't do an official pregnancy test - is this normal?

Not only that but when I took my arm out of my blouse so that he could take my blood pressure, he pressed record on a tape recorder!!!

I think I just expected the first appointment to be a bit more pleasant than it was!! :| :|

Hiya i think some work different. Most docs just refer you to a midwife and they book you in, they dont do a test anymore, they leave it all up to you!!

hey zoe  ,
I was exactly the same as you (without the grumpy male doctor  ), went to my doctors at 8 weeks to tell her i was pregnant, all she did was book a 12 week scan. I didnt have to take another test, and i didnt get to see my midwife until around 12 weeks when i went for my blood tests.
You shouldn't worry about it hun, you won't need to see the midwife unless you have a complication, in which case i think your GP can still see you :D

Doctors don't seem particularly interested. Mine just refered me to the consultant, and I only got feedback last week. The booking in appointment is the week before the 12 week scan - I got both dates in the same letter. I felt disappointed that nothing happened quicker and I got so little info - I didn't even know there was a early pregnancy unit at the hospital until I found out by accident. I got the impression that they aren't really bothered until you were up to 12 weeks in case something happened. Don't worry about the doctor - tell someone who cares and get the fuzzy feeling!
All the best

I think it depends where you are really

I saw my m/w twice before my scan at 10 weeks but my doc didn't do a test either so think that's quite normal :D

thats a shame your experience wasnt very good.

my doc was fab. got a phone call from the mw the next day and an appointment the day after. then i had my dating scan and got a 12week scan booked.

it really does differ on where you live. which is a shame

Hi

Guess all areas are really different.
I went to the doctor after i did my own pregnancy test and they gave me one to do there. Then booked a appointment with my family doctor and here you go every 4 weeks form the day you first go see a dcotor.

Sorry he wasnt much help hopefully your next visit goes smoother

Hi,

All surgeries have different ways of doing things. It is strange that you won't have your booking in with your own mw though.

What was all the business about the tape recorder?? Sounds a bit strange to me.

Good luck with your pregnancy.

My doctor wasn't very useful either. I went to see him as he was really useful when I thought I was pregnant but all home tests were negative, turns out I was! Any question I asked was given a vague answer and there was no real discussion by him about what happened next, bit of an anti-climax. I just hope my midwife is nice

 well 1st and congrats... yeah my doc did the same  , he asked me a couple of questions like when was your period, do you smoke, do you drink etc: but other then that you have to wait till your 12 week scan to get right in there.... he never gave me a pregnancy test either i asked but he said we trust are patients... but to see the doctor is just to get you reffed to the hospital app...

it depends on what area your in as to what treatment you get. i had to request a dating scan from my doc (pleased with her) as had irregular cycles. didnt get to see my mw till about 12 weeks and also had nuchal scan at 12 weeks, this isnt offered in some areas but its the scan for downs and spina biffida results. my next scan is at 23 weeks whereas other areas its 20 weeks so just depends. dont worry, as long as you have no problems then its fine to see mw at 12 weeks, its all paperwork anyway! x
