it depends on your local health authority as to whether you can find out or not. but i don't think the ones that do let you find out make you pay for it? i certainly didn't have to - although i did have to pay for the scan photos and dvd (but not much).
If your hospital send you a letter re your 20 week scan date often they will state if they offer the option of you knowing your baby's gender. Mine did but also had a disclaimer that it was only 80% accurate and they accepted no liability if the gender turned out to be incorrect.
Some hospitals choose not to tell even if asked. Its their policy and fair enough. Its only if the hospital wish to have a policy of telling parents if requested they will do so.
A private scan for gender is the option should your hospital not offer to tell you the gender.
