I have just called my midwife to ask when I am having a 16 week check-up and she said I'm not :eh:

She said they don't listen to the heartbeat until 22 weeks when baby is viable after the 20 week scan. By then I will know if baby is ok or not and won't need her to bloody check for heart beat!

I told her I couldn't find one with doppler and she said that's why we don't do it any more as it's hit and miss...she said I should be feeling baby move soon anyway.

I don't know been reading about ladies on here who had a 16 week scan and wondering why I can't...anyone else experienced this?

i cant understand that at all hun :eh: i know after your first pregnancy you dont have as many apps with the midwife as you would if it was your first but i had an app at 16wks and this is my 2nd so i kinda thought that everyone had a 16wk appointment and plus my midwife found the HB easily enough and when i went for my app i was only 15+2 confuddled much!!!! xx

I'm having a 17 week appointment and she said they listen for the heartbeat at every appointment (she listened at 10 weeks and heard it straight away)...I guess it's different in each area though?? x

When I had my consultant appointment the dr asked me why I hadn't been for a 16 week midwife checkup - I honestly didn't know I needed one! I now have an appointment for midwife at 24 weeks :)

I've not been well and from 14 weeks been drs a few times and I always ask the dr if he would check babies heart beat as I find it reassuring- they have always hummoured me and checked every time and heard it from 14 weeks even though I am very overweight - that said my dr said they are trained to hear it and told me not to get a Doppler as I'll freak myself out!

As for movement I didn't feel anything till 20 weeks - its def reassuring when you do though :)

xxxx

I'm having a 16w appointment in a week, it doesn't involve a scan but think she'll attempt to find the heartbeat

im having a 16 week appointment. this is my first.
im not really sure why.

That doesnt sound right somehow. The appointment isn't just about baby, it's to check you out too with blood pressure, wee sample etc. Can you maybe talk to your Dr?

I never had 16 weeks appointment either just one with midwife after 20 week scan where they listened for heartbeat then, maybe different policies in different areas.

just checked in my pregnancy book and 16wk appointments are for both 1st time mums and 2nd/3rd etc time mums the next appointment thats just for 1st time mums is 25wks which figures as my next one is at 28wk which it says in the book also! I would deffo speak to your gp like babyelmo said, deffo not right hun! xx

I had an appointment at 16 weeks. Midwife didn't listen to the heartbeat. She hasn't listened at the 25 week or 28 week appointment either.

I looked in my notes and they don't listen here until about 36 weeks!! Tis rather annoying but I guess that's the policy of the trust here.

I thought everyone had a 16 wk appointment (although mine is tomorrow at 17+4wks) they check ur blood pressure and do a urine sample, generally check if u are ok. Not sure if she will try to find the heartbeat but I have found it at home with my doppler anyway. xx

I've got an appointment at 24 weeks as well. I wonder if it's because it's been 9 years between my pregnancies?

I didn't have a 16 week scan, but this looks to have been a mistake. I hadn't actually seen a midwife since week 6 (until last Tuesday at 18+5) - and that was only because my OH started chasing them up about it. The midwife told me on Tues that I should have had an appt. earlier but that I'd somehow got lost in the system!:wall2: My first appt. was with a temp. midwife as there are so many pregnant ladies here in west yorkshire. Looks like I got lost in their books after the temp midwife saw me.

Possibly babyelmo...in fact ignore me haha...my book does say that but just checked for my next appointment and its 28th February which is 2 weeks after my scan making me 22wks lol!! God knows then maybe its just different procedure for different areas! I am now officially ignoring my pregnancy book and hope that the "labour is very painful" part is a lie too

xx

in my book, it says that you MAY be booked in for an appointment at 16 weeks.
to check blood pressure, urine and possibly heartbeat.
but i think it may depend on area.

also it will probably be more likely you are seen if you are classed as high risk.

Yeah thats what i thought :fib: haha x

Thing is if worst happened isn't it bad to carry on carrying baby to 20 weeks wouldn't you get infection or something...also if something had gone wrong wouldn't you get pain or bleeding?

Tried with my doppler again today and still only found my heart beat :( fed up....can't go to docs as I'm so busy looking after pups

I'm sure if God forbid anything was to go wrong your body would tell you hun and i would imagine you would get pain etc! I suppose so long as you have their number etc to hand just in case then they arent too worried and also your chances of anything bad happening are pretty slim now so try not to worry!! xx

I find it strange that you haven't been offered a 16 week appt - but like others have said, it seems to be different in different areas.

I have a Doppler and heard hb from about 14 weeks. However, it did take patience and getting used to. I got some tips on here when first using it: try to have a full bladder, use lots of gel, and try really low down (literally on your pubic bone).

Hope that helps xxx
