I have been told that I will be put into the 'Transitional Care Unit' (hopefully with James) after the birth as I have gestational diabetes and anaemia and both myself and James will need to be kept an eye on! I have been told James can be in my room unless he is born poorly and needs special care so am  that all will go well.

Have any of you ladies needed this type of care afterwards (esp due to gest diabetes) and if so how long did they need to keep you in for? They are being very cagey about my possible length of stay I think they don't wanna tell me as I'm getting stressed about going in as I have panic attacks, but I need to know how much to pack etc (and I'm worrying about silly things like missing my son Xmas concert at school). I will be packing xtra bags and leaving them at home so OH can just pick up bag and bring it in without having to attempt to pack the xtras himself but it's silly things I'm stressing over ie. eating in a strange place and going to the loo/shower as these things set my panic attacks off. I can't imagine attempting to last a week keeping my legs crossed :rotfl:

As soon as James gets the all clear I'm ouuta there as I have OH at home full time to look after me and James which would be much better for me anyways.

All advice gratefully received!!!

hi hun i went into high dependanacy after i had Hannah which sounds the same sort of thing i had undiognosed sp? diabetis when i had Hannah but she ended up in scbu through it and was the reason for her early arrival, i was in there just over a day before being transfered to a private room

I was in high dependancy then transitional care with Isaac, but not for GD. There was a lady who'd had a baby boy in transitional because she'd had a c-section and had GD while pregnant, she was in about 6days if I remember rightly, and it was a case of watching how baby was doing, but obviously it wasn't me so I cannot give details, but transitional care is quite strict with results as such so they won't be happy to let you leave until you and baby meet their result criteria as it were, they're much more relaxed on the usual post birth wards. As I never even wanted to be in hospital I found it difficult but they do it so you can stay in with your baby, otherwise they could discharge you alone, which I'm sure you wouldn't want  You will have your baby with you, unless the baby needs special SCBU treatment, Isaac was at my bedside in an incubator, the lady who was opp me in TC who had the GD, her baby wasn't in an incubator, he was just gorgeous and quite a big boy. You do get more individual attention as there's more staff there. It's fine, really, very best wishes
