what age do u think the speach theropist should be concerned ? my lo is 3 in march and is still barely reconiseable ..he was seen in sept and they said as he is a boy he is just lazy:wall2:he is seen again in feb i just wanna know if i can inist that he is seen often or just go with the flow ...he as reached all milestones early until the speach and i dont want it to hold him back in nursery

Is the wee one saying loads of words and you can't understand what he's saying?

Or is he saying very little in general? Honestly if you think there's a problem I would push for a referral. My son was born at 28 weeks so we knew he could have problems later on. I started worrying around 18 months and asked my HV could he be referred. She arranged it and the speech therapist came out to the house (he was 22 months) and watched him eating and listened to him speaking. He was fine.

I think by 3 you could quite easily get a referral if you're worried xx

I agree with Mamafy - if you're at all concerned I'd ask to have him seen as soon as possible, at least to put your mind at rest if it's nothing to be concerned about x

He had an assesment in sept inwhich they said they would review at 2 n 6month i said he is 2 and 6months ...she said oh i have him down as just 2 which means she assesed him 6 months behind what he should be ...his next assesment in feb i am hopin he will get help ..he signs loads ..he also talks loads but not a lot makes sense ...he as had his ears tested and they are fine .
thanks for replyin x

I hope it goes well, mummy instincts are rarely wrong

My sister's wee boy was referred to speech therapist at 30 months. I've got to say it didn't really make much difference. They give you excercises to do at home but its nothing magical.

As soon as he went to nursery and started interacting with the other children his speech just got brilliant within about 2 weeks! Its amazing what children pick up from other children.

Good luck tho, its worth seeing the speech therapist anyway tho.

Oh that's great! Hope things keep improving :)

Hiya hun. Im a specialist speech & language therapist in the NHS. Im really surprised the therapist said your son was "lazy", theres no such things as lazy speech and the therapist should know that. Also not very impressed that he/she mistook your sons age! Did she give you any activities to do at home while you wait for your review?

If you want some advice on how to access some extra support PM me. I cant really comment on what your son needs cos I havent met him but I can let you know how to work the system (which you shouldnt really have to do!) also bear in mind you are allowed to ask for a second opinion to give you piece of mind, you might have to go to a different clinic but every area will have teams of speech & language therapists so you dont have to see someone you're uncomfortable with.

Good luck!

My sister was told the same thing actually.
