We've only just had our long awaited baby #1 after three and a half years ttc so I'm not looking to start ttc again for a while (mainly because we're in a 1 bed flat which we've lost a lot of money on so can't move for a very long time!), but I'm wondering what contraception to go for whilst we're waiting to try for #2. We have fertility issues (hubby's swimmers mainly although my age won't help as time goes by, im 33 now and my tests last year were ok but borderline) so I'm expecting it to take a long time to conceive #2, if we ever manage to conceive at all, so I'm wanting to use a form of contraception which won't take long for my cycles to come back to normal when I stop using it, as if we decide to try then are left waiting months for me to start ovulating again I'd be gutted! Because i'm bottle feeding expressed breastmilk, the doc suggested either the mini pill, implant or IUD (don't fancy that, the thought of it creeps me out!). So I'm looking for advice, anyone used either or both, and if so, how long did it take for your cycles to return to normal?
I didn't think I'd be needing to think about contraception so soon but my periods seem to have returned already despite the breastfeeding! Argh!

I've got the mirena coil in hun. Fertility returns as soon as it's removed. I'm 34 so doc advised me against going back on the pill xx

I went on the mini-pill after I had my son last year. I came off it in December and my cycles returned back to normal quite quickly. When I came off the pill before my son it took 9 months and my cycles never settled down! To be honest the best if you are worrying about hormones is something like the coil which has no hormones or obviously condoms.

Kay kay, I'm also 34 and my doctor said my age wasn't an issue with the pill. She said the mini-pill probably was best compared to the combined pill but is still fine to take until my 40's.

Maybe I should try and get over my coil queasiness! ;) I think it was the bit in the leaflet about the threads hanging out your cervix that made me go a bit yuck! Is it quite painless when they do it? I think I just hate the thought of something being sat there inside me. I hate tampons for that same reason! X

I had the implant in and had it removed 3 months later, i was bleeding non stop with it. So now I'm on the mini pill and have not bled at all in 3 months lol I'm 34 and doc had no problem putting me on mini pill? Strange. He did say though that my body would go back to normal pretty quickly if i stopped the mini pill x

I have a blood condition and coupled with my age the pill would not be good for me. I was under the impression the pill wasn't recommended over 35 but I may have got that wrong. Cornish it wasn't painful getting it in just uncomfy esp since no one had been 'down there' since I'd given birth! I've never noticed any threads and I honestly don't think about it now. I did bleed for ages after I got it in. I know what you mean about being squeamish though, I don't use tampons either *shiver*

Do they fit it at your gp surgery? And can they do it at any point in your cycle? X

Yeah hun my GP did it. I had only had one AF at 10 weeks post partum and got the coil 6 weeks after that. So I think any time in your cycle is ok? I wouldn't get it done during AF (icky!). The good thing is I don't seem to have any PMT any more - I was terrible with it when I was on the pill.

Decided in the end to go with the pill as at least if I don't get on with it for any reason I can easily come off it rather than having to go and have something removed! Took my first one this evening. Still can't get my head around using contraception after years of ttc! X

if your planning on ttc in the near future i would try something without hormones, like the others have said the hormone free coil. i went on the mini pill and im struggling to conceive my second but it only took 11 days with my first. whatever u chose i would suggest when you come off of it wait for ur periods to return back to normal before ttc its much less stressful

hi hun ive just read your post and depending on how long you want in between to think strongly about the implant as it can take your body up to a year to come back to normal its just taken me nearly 3 months for it to leave my body and have a first proper cycle so I know how frustrating it can get waiting to try hope this helps hun xxx

I personally would advise against the implant. I had it for almost a year and it was hellish, I bled all the time and ended up with mood swings and regularly feeling very down. I also gained a lot of weight, whether that was due to the implant or because I wasn't happy I was comfort eating or something I don't know. Within a week after having it out my husband felt like he had his wife back! It took 3 months or so for my cycles to settle down so it wasn't too bad but I've heard it can take much longer for other ladies. It was made to sound like an amazing symptom free miracle but it definitely wasn't!

Sorry for the rant, I know some people do love it but I have heard more poor opinions than good.
