So! Here goes... (Sorry it's long and rambly!)
About 11pm on the 14th (Sunday), got up from the sofa to go to bed and said to OH 'either I've just wet myself, or my waters have gone!' - cue panic! Put a pad on, rang hospital who asked a few questions and said just to see what happens, try and get some sleep and go in at 6pm for induction the following day if nothing was happening before. Had a few irregular contractions, took some paracetamol but couldn't really settle!
Called midwife in the morning who asked me to go down to the health centre to get checked out - she confirmed it was deffo waters, and did an internal - cervix was doing NOTHING. Disappointment!
Went home and bounced on ball, walked around, had a couple of contractions but nothing major. Dropped pooch off at kennels. Resigned myself to being induced at 6pm.
Got to the hospital only to be greeted by very rude midwife who basically said we weren't supposed to be there. She abandoned us on the ward, saying she'd be back - OH got a bit ratty and went to find someone else. LOVELY midwife came and sat with us and explained that there'd been a mix up and we were actually expected at 11pm, and we were welcome to stay but may be more comfortable at home. I cried out of frustration and cos she was so nice - she gave me a hug and said she'd see me later.
Round 2 - after a couple of hrs sleep, went back to hospital for 11pm. Put on monitor, had internal, cervix was starting to thin out, MW inserted the pessary and told me to try and sleep. OH had to go home about 1am.
Contractions started up pretty quickly after that! I was breathing through them, kind of felt like I had to be quiet for other ladies on the ward with me! Called MW in at some point and asked her to run me a bath - HEAVEN ON EARTH
- eased the pain lots, continued breathing through, but couldn't stay in there forever!
At about 4.30am I caved and asked for some pain relief - she suggested pethidine which I wasn't keen on but she said because I was early on the effect would've worn off by the time baby was born, so I agreed (later regretted this as didn't ease the pain at all!!). Went to the loo, pessary fell out but I caught it! Took it back in with me, she gave me the pethidine then said she'd examine me to see if she needed to reinsert the pessary. Examined at 5am ish - 5cm!!! Wooooooo! Called OH to come back in as was being moved to delivery suite
Lovely midwives on delivery suite! Was put on trace, given gas and air (great stuff! Apparently I was saying I felt like I had whiskers, like a cat...) and brought some toast and squash.
Baby's movements were not ideal (due to stupid pethidine) so they wanted to give her some fluid to perk her up - had to have cannula which was not put in properly as halfway through hardcore labour my hand and arm swelled up like a balloon, so they had to redo it in other arm!
OH was tasked with trying to keep the monitor on baby's hr but kept losing it during contractions so they wanted to put a clip on her head - holy shit that hurt! I actually screamed! They couldn't get it on so said they'd try again in a little while.
Started feeling pressure in my bum, kept saying I needed a huge poo. Examined and fully dilated!!
Started pushing, but baby was back to back and after 1hr 45mins pushing she just wasn't coming down far enough! I was exhausted and they were worried she was going to start getting distressed. So in come the doctors who said they'd like to intervene with a ventouse delivery. I was just happy they were taking action at that point!!
So, off comes the end of the bed, up go the stirrups and they gave me some local anaesthetic as I would have to have an episiotomy. Lovely doctor was so encouraging with pushing - it was a very weird sensation - kind of felt like she was coming out sideways!
Out pops her head - OH looked over the top (without my permission
) and immediately started crying, he said she was looking straight at him. Couple more tiny pushes and she was out, I'd asked for OH to be the one to tell me the sex, which was truly such an emotional thing, to hear him say 'it's a little girl' was something I'll remember forever. So, with a full head of hair and covered in gunk, she was placed on my chest. Both me and OH could do nothing but cry and thank everyone in the room for everything they'd done
So that's that! Not planning on doing it again anytime soon but it was an amazing experience. Daisy's doing well, we're getting on ok with feeding - nipples are really effing sore but I'm powering through!
OH was fantastic through the whole thing. Kept me calm, held a cold flannel on my head, helped me focus on breathing and kept me going when I was flagging. Couldn't have done it without him.
So if you managed to get through all that, well done!
