cycle length

This may be a really silly question, but i'm really new to all this..
How do you know your cycle length.?
I used to be on the pill, so took it for 21day's and then AF was around 5days, then waited 2days then continued with the pill.. etc.. etc..
After coming off the pill my AF is all over the place, which i expect is normal?
Will i have to wait until my AF is regular and normal until i know this?

yes once your period regulates you will be able to tell how long your average cycle length is
