Hi ladies,

Just wondered if anyone could give me an idea as to costs so that I can start to budget properly. So basically how much per day do you pay for nursery and/or childminder and/or a nanny?

Thanks

I guess it also depends where you live. Were we are we looked at nurseries and they where around £1200/month.

i looked on direct govs website:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/Childcare/index.htm

and i searched the local nurseries & then child minders, it depends on your area and how many hours etc you want them to look after baby, but my local child minders are from about £4 per hour to the best nursery at £40 per day,

good luck in your search

I was quite lucky and got my parents to have lace one day a week while i worked but i still put her in 2 days a week and for 6 hours a day, it cost me £22.50 so about £45 a week.

Hiya!

I'm a Childminder and have also been a Nursery Nurse and know a bit about Nannying too! :)

Firstly Nannies - You have to pay them whatever amount you decide between you and the Nanny but then you also have to pay Nanny tax. Say you pay the Nanny £6.00 an hour you then have to pay all of their tax on top so they basically take home the whole £6.00!! Can be very expensive! But then your little one is in their own home.

Nurseries - Each nursery charges a different amount of fee's. The nursery I worked at charged a higher amount for a baby under a year (don't really know why coz they don't eat much and take up less room?! lol). You can also get free 3 year old funding which means when they trun 3 you won't have to pay as much. I'm not really sure what the current fee's are for nurseries you'd have to call your local nurseries and find out.

Childminders - Basically Childminder's can charge whatever they like! At the moment I charge £4.50 per hour but I know alot of Childminders charge alot more money as well as some being slightly cheaper. Some Childminders charge you extra money for meals but I feel at £4.50 an hour thats more than enough for me to include meals too.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need to know anything else! :)

It depends on area I noticed too, friends closer to London are paying nearly the same as me only they have 1 child I have 2!

Mine are in nursery!

£31 per day per child I get a discount for 2 in fulltime so £242 a week for both!

Thanks everyone that's a really helpful starting point - need to get my thinking cap on and research options locally nearer the time - thanks xxx:)

Wow Wobbles £31 a day is very cheap!!

When I was a Nursery Nurse 7 years ago it was £35 per day for a child under a year!! I dread to think how much she charges 7 years later!!

Hi,
I think it varies on where you live, and how old the child is! Before my daughter turned 3, it was about £55 a day, after she turned 3, Govt ones were about £25 a day (for all day) and private were still about £50 a day.
My son is now 2 months, and thank god my partner is taking a year out so he's looking after our son while I finish Uni (which I must say I hate as I miss my baby so much) but if he was in a nursery it would be about £65 a day... we do live in London though.

One thing I will say. PLEASE don't assume more expensive nurseries will be better. I looked at a Montessori nursery for my daughter, and quite frankly was disgusted at it. No chance was my dauhter going there. She went to a state one, which at first I loved, but after 3 months I had a catalogue of major concerns (in my opinion) i.e. She was there from 8-6 Mondays and Tuesdays.... should have had breakfast, lunch and dinner there, and they forgot to mention that she never ate a bite of food. My daughter is very happy and chatty, but would come out silent and not seeming herself. She was wearing knickers, and they put a nappy on her one day because they didn't want to clean her up. The next point was the final straw....
She came home one day in a diffeent pair of knickers... but the same dry trousers, and I know she didn't have an accident... Why the hell have you gone near my daughter's underwear if she has had no accident.
I called another nursery that I had fallen in love with but she hadn't got in as we lived a fair bit away from, asked to speak to the headteacher and literally begged her, virtually crying. Thankfully someone had pulled out. I yanked my daughter out of her nursery so fast.
She loves her nursery now, literally loves it. Eats amazingly well, never has accidents and comes home talking again. This one is also a state nursery.
So when looking at childcare basically, try and get recommendaions, do lots of visits, and if you do find one, try and see how your child sees in it!
Sorry for the long message!
