Contractions appearing as back pain?

Just curious, I know that contractions can appear as back pain first but as I've suffered with back pain for the last 6 months, how will I distinguish the difference between back pain and labour pains?

I'm currently having very painful waves of pain in my lower back every few minutes but very irregular, that are making it uncomfortable for me to sit or move. It feels like a very intense version of my usual back pain that comes up every few days or so.

Anyone offer any insight?
Thanks :)

Sounds like early labour hope it progresses quickly for you :) xx

My contractions were all across my back, it felt very low down and it was agony. Like period pain x 10000. If it's in waves then it sounds promising!

Looks like things are starting to happen for you FFO, fingers crossed!!! actually very good question, I've been wondering myself when back pain is just a back pain and when it becomes labour?! Had a few contractions (maybe 10) with bad back pain (in vawes) close to each other while I was sitting on the ball and baby was wriggling causing me shooting pains too, all stopped now while Im in bed :( looking forward to time when they wont stop but increase, so disappointing when they stop :(

From my experience you definitely won't mistake the contractions for anything else! Good luck ladies, September mummies time now! X

Thanks for the replies ladies!
I posted an update on the Sept thread -

So the back pains/stomach pains I was having last night have eased, making me think either baby was pinching a nerve or perhaps v bad BH, or maybe a stop start I'm not sure. I struggled to sleep because I felt so ill and today I feel poorly with an upset tummy and uncomfortable middle section. OH went back to work this morning for a set of 7 shifts and the first thing he said when he woke up at 5am was 'Sure you don't wanna go into labour today?' I WISH

So not really sure what it was all about really!

Unrelated but MissCharli - I can't believe Theo is a month old already!

Mine was all in my back ... nothing at all in my front until I was pushing her out!
Started on Sunday afternoon and couldn't even move. Woke up Monday still there, and get into worse by Monday night oh my the pain!! And I was 4cm dilated  ... maybe you should go get checked. (My pain felt like normal low back pain but was coming and going and slowly got closer together) x

PB that's really helpful to know! I woke up this morning and the pain has eased I was just very uncomfortable and grumpy, and I've got an upset tummy and really sweaty but able to keep food in. I'm keeping an eye on any back pain though and if it happens again I might call up and ask for advice. My stomach wasn't getting hard during the pain like BH but every time baby moved it was painful.

Right now it's aching because I've been organising the clothes in the nursery!
