constipated baby :(

hiya me again,
Baby Ava is constipated she is only 5 days old and strains soo bad to go to poo, she is on cow and gates 1st milk! i mentioned this to my midwife who said give her 2oz of water day and night, this isnt working just yet, is there anything else i can be doing to help the poor mite?

You could try and ask for some Lactulose, thats what i was given for my boy when he got constipated, i was also to put the tiniest amount of brown sugar in the water but i didnt go for that one.

when i switched nathan from breast to formula he was the same really struggling to go and i gave him water. it took a few days to get working but it did. i did the brown sugar thing but now i use a sanatagen baby vitamin drop in i which is sugar free but still gives the water a sweet taste.
in the end i found out it was the formula which was making him constipated so i switched from sma to farleys and he finds it a lot easier now

My little boy had the same on SMA so we switched to Cow and Gate because it has prebiotics in and he was great.

Rub her lower back and then when she is straining hold her legs up toward her ears as if shes doing the bicycle.

you could also try a warm bath

if this doesn't resolve itself you should see your doctor becasue it can become a vicious circle.

Are you bottle feeding or breastfeeding.

My guess is bottle feeding. If so try hanging the formula to a more gentle one like the comfort one (don't know the make - cow and gate i think)
