my 3yr old son has just come out in the chickenpox rash today, there was an outbreak at his nursery last week and I was hoping we'd escaped it but no such luck!!

I'm concerned about Lucy as she is only 15 days old. Does anyone know how chickenpox affects newborns????

I remember reading up on it cos my eldest caught it when Nathan was only 4 months. A nurse told me that they have some immunity for the first couple of months of you. Nathan was absolutly fine though and his chicken pox were milder than the girls. I would ask your HV though cos she is really young and will probally only be 4 weeks if she gets them

There was an outbreak at the school OH works at when LO was newborn, and he checked with the HV who said it doesn't really bother babies if they get it - she actually thought it was the best time to get it! she didn;t think it was anything to worry about at all.

it really is the best time as it doesn't seem to fase babies as much as older kids.. :D Your immunity is still present when your baby is under a month old... regardless of bfing so if you have had chicken pox you LO might not get it too badly... :D

Thanks for replies!! I spoke to HV today and she said exactly the same as you!! Lucy is fine as she has some of my immunity so I have breathed a sigh of relief now!!! :D

I've just looked it up on NHS direct, cause Ash was exposed to it earlier this week.

It does say that babies under 4 weeks are at risk from more serious complications so I would definitely check with your GP if I were you.

This is from NHS direct website:
You should also contact your GP if your baby has been in contact with the chickenpox virus and is less than four weeks old. Chickenpox in these people can cause serious complications if left untreated. It is therefore essential that you seek medical advice so that any necessary precautions or treatment can be provided.
