when in pregnancy is the cervix meant to soften? if it is soft does it mean the baby is coming soon?

Don't think it means baby is coming soon as the softening can begin upto 2 months before your due date.

The cervix will efface before dilation I think, so once fully effaced I'd say baby would be ready to come and dilation should begin!! (Someone will probably come along and correct me!!)

In my experience, nothing means baby is coming soon :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:
Sorry for moaning.
I had a sweep yesterday and the midwife told me that I am not completely effaced - cervix is still 1cm thick - but I am 2-3cm dilated. I hadn't realised you could be dilated but not fully effaced but apparently so.
Like soulem says, I think the cervix can soften a good while before baby arrives.

There is no set time.

I ditto what the others have said :)

I went to hospital at 30 odd weeks and my cervix was softening, they did say it 'could' mean early labour but here I am still very pregnant
