when in pregnancy is the cervix meant to soften? if it is soft does it mean the baby is coming soon? sorry for posting on here posted it in 3rd tri but got no replies as usual lol.....

I think it softens whilst in labour but I don't know so don't hold me to it! But i did google it for you and found this web page about signs of labour so hope this is some help to you, I'm sorry if its not!
As far as I know it starts ripening or softening during the last weeks of the 3rd trimester. When I was 34 weeks pregnant with my son they checked my cervix to see if it was soft enough to induce me but it wasn't so they had to cut me instead... but it ripens off before hand so when labour actually starts it can dilate.
I had a look in my book this morning and although it was quite vague I think it's supposed to start to soften in the last few weeks before labour beings. It softens so that it can dilate when you're in labour.
you could ask your MW as she'll probably know a definitive answer for you
