Hi,

As we're so close to finally moving into our own home, we have now started thinking about something else we'd really love..., a cat! We'd get a slightly older cat that has been litter/potty trained.

As neither of us has had a cat for a long time though, we don't know what costs are likely to be. How much food do they eat a week (what's the weekly cat budget?!) and insurance etc?

Thanks!

I'm £5 a month for insurance for my cat. Food wise I spent maybe £20 a month and that sees her through.. Sometimes last longer cos if there is any meat left over from dinner, like chicken or beef, then she will have some lol..

Vets not too bad either where I am.. I was only £35 to get her neutered..

Kittens are usually instantly litter trained as they learn from their mother, I have had cats from 10 weeks of age and have never had to train them to use a litter tray, all I've ever done is show them where it is in the house (usually within a few feet of their food bowl-but not right next to) so that it's easy access.

I pay about £10 a month in total for food and insurance costs me £6 per month.

Ooh lovely, I'm a big cat lover, our two cats rule our life, they will get a big shock when baby arrives :D
Ours cost about £30 to feed 2 of them but they are big kitties, one is 5kg and the other is 9kg and now on a diet after a vets visit this week, :-o

Thanks guys. Now we're in the new house we can really start preparing, woo!

Mine is 4 months old and costs £2 every 3 or so weeks on food. That is all she costs!

Our monthly breakdown (for two cats, both spayed/neutered) is...:

£17 for insurance.
£22 for vet payment plan (incl. yearly boosters, twice yearly checkups, flea and worming treatments etc.)
£15 for wet cat food.
£4 for dry cat food.

My cat is an indoor cat and that does make a difference!

We paid £150 for her to begin with (very expensive for a moggy!!)

We also had to lay out for enclosed litter tray, cat bed, bowls for food and water, toys, brush etc....

We paid for her to have her injections and be de-fleaed and dewormed - about £70. We also then got her spayed and microchipped - £100. Vets in London are very expensive though...

I pay £12 a month for insurance, £20 a month for food and about £20 a month for litter. This doesn't include any treats.

She is now 4 years old and we'd not be without her, I don't begrudge a penny!

xxxxxxxx

We have 2 cats that we got as kittens from a local animal shelter. We paid £80 each for them but that covered the cost of getting them microchipped, neutering, worming for the first couple of months and their first lot of injections. We pay £13 for both of them for insurance and £100 a year for boosters and vet checks. We have a male and a female cat and its more expensive to insure our male cat. Not really sure how much we pay for food as we just get it in our weekly shop or when it is on offer. If you don't get a cat from a shelter do look at what they are offering as our local one does micro chipping for free and neutering for a reduced price x
