After reading Olya's birth story I decided I'd quite like to do my own one, I always liked to read them when I was pregnant and hopefully it won't freak anyone out, but give an insight into how things don't always go to plan.
On Friday 20th (5 days before my due date) I was pretty fed up and I think looking back it was an indication of what was to come. At 1.30am on Saturday morning I woke up feeling a little bit strange and slightly wet. It wasn't until I moved that I realised my waters had gone so I woke OH. I rang the birthing centre to let them know and they asked me to come in to check it was my waters (it most definitely was lol).
Unfortunately when they took my BP at the birthing centre it was too high, but my BP had been borderline high all throughout my pregnancy. They rang the nearest hospital who wanted me to come in to be monitored. I spent a horrible amount of hours in the early hours of Saturday morning hooked up to a trace and having slight pains that tapered off. They discharged me when they were happy things were okay and I was told I would be called back for induction on Sunday morning if nothing had progressed. Whilst I was on the early labour ward a young girl came in howling as she was 10cm dilated and needed to push. I told the midwife if my BP was high that was why lol.
We went home both feeling knackered and slept until about 4pm. It started to sink in about 7pm that I might be looking at having an induction so I was pacing the lounge and bouncing on my ball absolutely desperate for something to happen. My waters just kept going and going throughout the day and I went through so many pads and pants! So if anyone reading this has their waters go, be prepared lol.
About 8pm my contractions started properly, they were about 30 seconds long every 15 minutes to begin with. My OH and I went up to bed about 11pm to see if we could sleep, but they started coming every 5 minutes and it was starting to hurt a bit so we went to the birthing centre. They examined me and I was 6cm dilated which I was thrilled with but even more thrilled when they wheeled in the gas and air for me. Unfortunately my BP was high again so after speaking to the hospital they decided to transfer me in an ambulance, my poor OH had to follow in his car and I'm sure it was the longest trip in his life.
When I got to the hospital I had a lovely midwife who was so calm and patient with me. I had to be hooked up to the trace again so I was stuck on my back for the whole labour which I really didn't want at all. After this point it gets a bit hazy as I was on so much gas and air I was so out of it. I know I was really struggling and OH told me I was offered an epidural which I actually declined lol. They offered me diamorphine instead and it helped so much. I managed to calm down and actually breathe through contractions and was a lot more alert. It was my back that was hurting although it wasn't a back to back labour.
I'd felt the urge to push for a while and couldn't help but do it, even though I had been checked not long before and I was gutted to be told I was 6cm still. My midwife went on her break and a student midwife came in to keep an eye on me. She asked if I felt I needed to push and told her I did. She checked me and said she could see the head so she went to find the midwife looking after me. She told the student she didn't think I'd be at the point yet but came in to check me anyway and was shocked to find she could see his head.
It took about 3 or 4 pushes to get his head out and then 1 push to get the rest of him out. I'll never forget the moment he was placed on my chest and the rush of love that I had for him and my OH.
Oscar Leo William was born weighing 8 pounds 15 ounces at 4.32am on Sunday 22nd March and absolutely perfect. I was a bit worse for wear, I ended up with a 2nd degree tear in my perineum but also some grazes near my urethra that needed stitching, that was especially sore! I also ended up needing a catheter twice which made me nearly hysterical due to where my stitches were. I would go through it again to have him though and probably the worst part of it was where my stitches were, I felt so much better when I got to the pushing stage and when I was in the transitional stage I felt so calm and kept asking the midwife "why do I feel so calm? Why do i feel so okay about this?" lol.
It was far from the water birth at the birthing centre that I wanted, I would recommend not setting your heart on anything as you don't know things will progress but it doesn't matter because at the end of it, you get your beautiful little bundle and it makes it so worth it
