So Thursday morning woke up and had a small gush when going to the toilet. Had small patches of wet throughout the day when I stood up but was unsure if it was wayers or cm. went to maternity assessment unit at 5pm to get checked. They looked and said no everything was in tact. They didn't do a swab.

Friday all day small patches of wet which they had put down to cm. this didn't sit comfortably with me and all my instincts told me it was my waters. Went back to maternity assessment unit at 2am Saturday morning. Midwife went to examine me around 3am and as soon as she put in cannula my waters broke on table. They then decided to treat me that the waters had broken on Thursday morning so I was nearly 48 hours with a slow leak. They decided to induce me there and then. Hubby left to get my bags and I was taken to the induction suite.

In the induction suite I was hooked to the monitor for an hour, hubby came with bags and I sent him home for a snooze as nothing much would happen for a few hours. Before 5 I went to the loo and noticed that my waters were not running clear. I showed the midwife my pad who confirmed that there was meniconum in my waters. That was the end of using the bath :-( At 5am I was dilated 2cm but still had some thinning out to do. a pessary was inserted, I was hooked up to the monitor for another hour and was told that I would be going down to the delivery suite after 11am.

Hubby came back over around 10, was getting pains for about 2 hours but nothing too bad. The ball was great for relieving the pressure.

At around 11.30am we made our way to the delivery suite. I met my amazing midwife who then explained what would happen. I was getting hooked up to the drip to bring labour on quickly due to infection and the poo. She explained that when baby was born a team would be in the room, I wouldn't get skin to skin and baby would not be made to cry. She explained this calmly and we had full faith we were in the right hands. I to her that I still had one set of waters left and she proceeded to pop them. This was my first experience of gas and air... Amazing stuff lol!

So at 2pm I was hooked up to the drip and the baby monitor. I sat on my ball and waited. The pains started to come thick, fast and painful. I managed to 4pm on the gas and air alone and the midwife offered diamorphine. I said no and she asked why, I started to cry and said because she wasn't checking me until 6pm and I if I was only 3/4cm what would I take then. God love her she said that wouldn't be the case and that if I was in pain to take it. I then agreed.

I have mixed feelings on the diamorphine. It is an effective pain reliever but there is a lot of the labour I can't remember, I just keep having flashbacks or what hubby tells me. Although I have to say induction was horrendous. I was having 5contractions in 10mins lasting 1/2 minutes each from early on so was not getting much of a break at all. I would love to know what natural labour feels like.

So at 6pm I was checked and I was 8cms. At this stage baby started to get distressed so I had to get into different positions which felt like someone was hitting me with a sledge hammer. At around 6.30 I told the midwife I needed to push. I was checked and I was 10cm. However there was a lip on my cervix that prevented me from pushing. I had to hold on for 40 minutes, which was the only bit of labour that I could say was hell. The feeling of needing to push but not being able to was horrendous. This is where is all goes a bit bleary. I was told they were giving me an epistomy (sp) after that I was able to push which was the biggest relief and my wee princess was born at 7.40pm. She cried herself and the whole room relaxed. She was taken away, given some quick checks and I got my skin to skin within about 10mins which was the best feeling in the world. I then proceeded to loose a litre of blood, the placenta was stuck and I was prepped for surgery. However, they managed to stop bleeding, placenta came and all was right in the world.

So a bit of a long story but wanted to document everything for me more than anything. My points for all you ladies waiting to deliver. Induction was tough but manageable. Diamorphine dampens your awareness. Overall trust your delivery team, they really don't get paid enough. I had lots of mini dramas but both me and Alexandra are doing brilliantly two weeks on and I can't thank the nhs enough!

Bubbles it sounds like it was tough, but you did really well. Congratulations on your little bundle xx

I agree about the nhs and it's staff - absolutely first class

Thanks ladies. I feel proud of my labour story if that makes sense. It's funny, driving over to the hospital I said to hubby things aren't right. He replied, nothing ever comes easy for us but it always works out amazing in the end and his words have rang so true!!

Really enjoyed reading this bubbles, thanks so much for sharing. You should feel really proud! X

congrats - glad you are both fine.

I remember diamorphine! I was given it when in labour with my son after induction - and I moaned it hadn't done anything - but to my suprise I had been asleep for 4 hours and knew nothing about it! midwife said she had been checking on me and I was asleep - I didn't have a clue I had been asleep - I just thought I was given the injection and it hadn't done anything, lol.

Congratulations Bubbles, glad you had a safe delivery, hope you're loving every minute of being a Mummy x

Also don't have any regrets about taking the drugs, I just had Gas & air and have some memory blanks of my labour and it's almost like I remember it in the third person!
