Breastfeeding Support Thread

Cheers beanie, fortunately I don't think he has got nipple confusion - he was throwing his wobblies before I introduced the bottles, having read some of the earlier posts I think it could be because my boobs are just to full and the milk just comes ousing out to fast for him, also mabe some times I leave it until he gets to hungry? As he does take the boob, late night feds are generally fine when we're both lying down together in bed - he seems quite happy then. Maybe i just have to keep putting him on the boob more often during the day??
On the other hand he is obviously taking in enough milk, he was weighed yesterday and is now a hefty 8pounds 13 (his birth weight was 7pounds 1), so I'm well pleased the 'supa juice' is working :).
Skatty sounds like your all sorted then! It's such a bizarre feeling knowing that this is YOUR baby, still can't believe it myself! Otis has grown - or so it seems, don't think it will be much longer before we'll be up grading him into some bigger cloths.

Yes Daggers it is wierd to think we are parents! Its great though isn't it? Leorah is also growing, my friend sent tiny baby clothes for her and they swamped her but now they are beginning to fit. Mind you she has a ferocious appetite sometimes! I have so much milk and when she's going at it it dripping all down her chin and the other one is leaking, I didn't know how messy it would be :rotfl: , I don't think I could ever feed outside the home so I take a bottle of expressed milk if we are going out.

How's Otis with the boob now? Is he getting used to it again? do you think he has a tantrum because your boobs are so full he finds it hard to latch on? This happens with Leorah and god forbid she loses the latch, you'd think I was torturing her :rotfl:

Skatty and Daggers, I just wanted to reassure you both that Olivia was also like this when she was a newborn. I had to make sure I latched her on before she was ravenous otherwise she would have strop and arch away and scream etc. Like you Daggers sometimes I expressed some milk away or otherwise let it spray into a muslin cloth when she had sucked enough to get the "letdown".

Please let me reassure you both though that the feeding wont always be as messy as this. Once your milk supply settles down (which is also why they advise you not to express in the first 6 wks as your body is adjusting to how much milk to produce) you wont leak as much. Your babies will very soon be able to see your nipple (that's why it's darker than your boob, so they can see if very early on in life) so you'll be able to just put them in next to your boob and they will latch on themselves.

Well done to both of you

Lucy

Skatty, You will get used to feeding in public. No one has ever noticed or said anything to me about feeding Oliver when out. People will not notice you! If they do they are looking to hard.

To start with maybe you could try feeding in mother and baby rooms untill you get used to not been in your house? This is what I did the first few times i was out with oliver.

Well done, glad you are enjoy been a breast feeding mummy!

Jadie

Thank you Lucy and jadie, its great getting reassurance and support on here

The other reason i don't think I'll be able to BF in public is that leorah is a reaaly noisy eater, lots of appreciative sound effects :rotfl:

Cheers Lucy! I have been trying to cut back on the bottles and use the boob more especially if I've just expressed as I think Otis just gets swamped when my boobs are so full. The early hour feeds (2am, 4am, etc) seem to be the easiest, even though my boobs are generally at full capacity at the time maybe bacause he is so sleepy. The only thing is half the time he ends up getting so wet (as we're both lying down when I feed him the milk just dribbles down onto us both!!!) .
:wall: Otherwise he still goes a bit nuts every now and again but I just keep at it. I've feed him a few times out in public, actually once we're out on a walk when I impressed myself by feeding hit while holding him with one arm and walking! Try that for multi tasking!!! Super juice on the move!!!! If we do go out - to a cafe or so I general try to cover up a bit with a sheet - why I don't know, guess I don't want to cause any upset! Even though really I don't care what anyone else thinks, it is completely natural.

Good for you Daggers! Perhaps I'll give the public feeding a go in a few weeks! I have that problem of milk everywhere especially at night and I have started putting a bib on Leorah.

I have another question! Leorah has started being sick after her feeds. Do you think she is overeating and is this normal with a breastfed baby? Also we had a terrible night last night from midnight onwards, I had eaten a stir fry and the onlly ingredients I haven't eaten before were brown rice, sweetcorn and soy sauce, do you think one of these might have upset her? I kept winding her but the pain didn't seem to be from needing to burp. I am already dreading a repeat performance tonight as I have had hardly any sleep. also can she choke on her sick in her sleep? She sleeps on her back even though I prefer her on her side as she sleeps better. Thanks in advance :D

hehehe, I know it's not funny but we to had an all nighter about two days after Otis got home, I thought it may have been something I'd eaten, but looking back I think it was just his whole digestive system getting to used to processing milk - not sure if this was the case but we haven't had any repeat episodes and I've eaten alsorts - including spicey foods! But man Skatty it sure wasn't fun Otis kept going between crying and screaming all night until about 04:30 - 05:00 when both my OH and I were down stairs on the sofa going OMG what have we done!!! and whether out of exhaustion or the enjoyment of me massaging his head he finally went to sleep, what a loooooooong night that was!
I too have started using bibs - when I can remember! And yes Otis at times does get sick after I've BF him (not bottle fed though?).
Skatty also wanted to ask, Leorah is she sleep in her cot or moses basket at he mo? I'm going to try keeping Otis in his cot tonight until around 4/5am (when he is generally up for another fed) as I think his basket is becoming a bit constricting especially as he sleeps in one of those sleeping bags (dream pods), he already sleep in his cot from about 7pm - 11pm and then again until about 2am when we move him to our room in the basket, then from about 5am onwards I put him in our bed as he is too figgity and is up every 30mins / 1hr!!!

I hate to sayit but it could be she is starting to get colic :-(that was the age that Ellie started getting colic. I also found that Ellie slept better on her side and from about 3 weeks (when I discovered it) until she was about 8 weeks putting her side. At about 8weeks we started using a dreampod, and she slept well on her back from then on.

Oh no Nicky I hope she isn't going to get colic

Daggers, I have been putting Leorah in her moses basket on my bed. At around 7 -8ish she goes down awake and sends herself off to sleep but from then on she keeps waking up every few hours and is restless all night. Last night I changed it all! I fed her sitting up and then let her stay sitting up for 20 mins looking around the room and then decided sod it and let her sleep the night away with me propped upright on pillows. We had the best night ever! She wasn't sick, bought up all her wind, no hiccups and fed at 5.30 this morning and in the end I woke her up at 10 to feed her otherwise I think she'd have stayed there all day. I keep reading different books bout routines and importance of where they sleep but I have just decided that she is too tiny and if she feels cosy with me then so be it for now! even if she was born today she'd still be a week early so I don't think it will spoil her and we both got some sleep and she is still really settled this morning and asleep outside in her pram.

Since I started to write this message the health visitor has been. She said that most babies find their milk harder to digest in the evening and nighttime. She also said its far too early for a baby to get into bad sleeping habits. I hope she's right! Eveyone seems to have a different opinion!

Skatty I can't imagine how tiny Leorah must be, I thought Otis was small as he was! Had him weighed today and he is now 9pounds 4 - little fat man, it's all that 'super juice'!
I agree with you in term of letting baba sleep with you if it gives everyone a bit of rest, as I mentioned Otis is generally in bed with us from 5am owns anyway as he is far to restless! I had him in his own room in his cot for most of last night, and then at I think it was 5am I thought sod it and jsut had him in our bed again as I'd been up more of less from around 3am with a few winks in between. Think I need to fed him more when he wakes between 2 & 3am?! Hope to get all this mallarky right one day, or else I might end up going dilerious - like most moms do (from what I hear!).
On another note final had our dinning table delivered today and tomorrow our sofa is being delivered - it's almost like Christmas, at last we can start to try and finish decorating the living /dinning area!

 I have a question,it may have already been answered somewhere, but is it okay to take flaxseed oil whilst breastfeeding??
I have been hearing so much about this omega 3 that I thought Finn may benefit through my milk if I take this - anyone else take it?? :)

I'm not sure about Flaxseed but I know evening primrose is ok and good for breastfeeding Mums :)

Daggers isn't it nice to be able to concentrate on your house again? My DH has been doing up the conservatory and we wiil do the bathroom next. On the run up to the birth we couldn't concentrate on anything else!

Well last night I decided to give Leorah infacol before each feed and I don't know if it was a coincidence but she had the best nightb yet! She woke exactly 3 hourly and on one occassion fed, winded, changed and settled back to sleep in 40 mins! This is amazing for us! The nly prob was after the 6am feed she wanted to saty up so I called the DH to come and take over. Please cross your fingers for me that last night wasn't a one off!

It is amazing how fast they grow isn't it? Leorah now weighs over 3kg, my Mum said I must be producing gold top! She is still tiny but her tiny baby babygrows now fiit her perfectly, the newborn stuff still swamps her though!

How has Otis been the last couple of nights?

Skatty, so how's the 3 hourly feeds going? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you but if Otis is anything to go by then it could be short lived! No he's a good boy, and has been sleeping a bit longer now, last night he slept from 7 - 11:30ish and then I think my OH put him now around 1am and when didn't wake till around 04:30 when I got him and put him in our bed. We're trying to pump him with as much milk as we can in the hopes of knocking him out for longer! Infacol, what's that? I'll have a wee look on tinternet, is it still doing the trick?
Yesterday had my first bath with the Ots mister! He's such a cutie, fortunately he didn't poop or pee in the bath, however he did show the wall above his changer unit before hand!!!!
Is your OH still at home with you - how long is paternity leave in Denmark?

Hi daggers, Martin has another week off, he gets 3 weeks paternity leave which isn't bad. He also gets 6 weeks holiday a year and 3 extra days per child a year for bonding!! That's one good thing about Denmark!

It seems the nights are one day good and one day bad for us! Last night was a good noght, Leorah woke up like clockwork every 3 hours fed, winded, nappy change and back to sleep with no problems or pain :cheer: I didn't speak the whole time and didn't make eye contact as she seems to be awake at night and asleep in the day  The night before was awful, she just wouldn't sleep which meant I didn't either! was so upste all day yesterday, I now realise from lack of sleep because I am fine today after getting sleeps between her feeding.

Infacol are orange flavoured drops that you give babies before feeding that help them bring wind up, I don't know if its working but if last night was anything to go by then yes! I think they work best after you have given them a few days. Its hard to remember sometimes and although it doesn't say it I think they work best if you give them 10 or 15 mins before a feed which is hard when you have a crying, hungry baby waking up. We are going to take Leorah for some reflexology so I hope that will help too.

You are so lucky having a bath, I really want one but its all showers over here :(

Good luck tonight, I hope you get lots of sleep!

WHAT! All showers what's that all about??? Man I remember when we were house hunting we looked at a couple that only had showers, for me that was a definate NO! That must suck, so how will you eventually bath Leorah once she gets a bit bigger?
Still haven't googled Infacol - must have a look!
Yes Denmark is go fab re their paternity leave, England sucks with their 2 weeks, however with my OH working from home it really doesn't make a difference to me -
Otis is settling into some kind of routine but it does change, today I had to wake him at 18:30 so I could bath, feed and get him to bed!!! Hopefully he'll stay asleep till 11:30 / midnight. Again today had him on the boob and after 5mins or so he starts to freak out!! Tried winding him but that doesn't seem to be the problem, not sure if it's me doing something wrong?!

Hi Daggers

Olivia used to act like your wee boy and arch away from my breast and fight it after not long suckling. I think my strong let down freaked her out and she didn't like the strong flow of the milk pouring in her mouth. I didn't get to the bottom of it but I did think that Colycynthis granules (available from chemists at the pharmacy part). They are a homeopathic remedy that a paediatric nurse specialising in breastfeeding recommended to me when she observed Olivia feeding. I do think they helped but I think Olivia got a bit bigger and got used to my reflex aswell (the CG are to help trapped wind and general fractiousness).

Hope your wee ones sleep well tonight

Lucy

Hi Lucy, are those granules the same as colocynth? I saw some others on the forum had used these with success and have been trying to get some but I can't find any on the net. I'll get my Mum to go to Boots in England :)

Daggers I read that when baby keeps pulling away but its not at every feed it could be because you've eaten something they don't like the taste of, did you eat anything particularly strong?

Well Leorah still woke every 3 hours last night but her feeds took ages and all day yesterday she kept waking up wanting to feed every 1½ - 2 hours, I'm exhausted! Do you think she may be having a growth spurt? On the plus side her stomache problems seem to have eased so I have to say I think it must be the infacol. She does have to really concentrate to do a poo still but doesn't seem to have the excruciating pain thank god!

Last night at about 4am when she was finally beginning to settle I told her I love her and she smiled! I know it was wind but it made me feel so good anyway! When she is falling asleep and I stroke her cheeks I get a contented little grin too! I can't wait for big, social gummy smiles from her :D Its amazing how demanding and tiring babies can be but at the end of the day it really doesn't matter does it?

Skatty - they probably are the same, what I bought was a wee bottle full of tiny white balls. The instructions are to either put them straight on baby's tongue or dilute in 5ml water and then give to baby.

I think your little one probably is having a growth spurt and it could also be that she absolutely loves being so close to her mum - she feels safe and secure! Imagine how scary it is for these wee babies to come into the world and not be able to see clearly and not understand any of this noise!

Do you use a sling at all? SOmetimes when Olivia wanted to feed all the time I popped her in the sling and it settled her and was able to get on with some things - that's when I realised it was comfort that she was feeding for and as she just kept on topping up her tummy she wasn't ever really hungry enough to take a full feed. I'm not suggesting feeding to a routine or anything but in the early days I mistook hunger for comfort and think this also led to Olivia's belly ache.

Soon enough your babies will get much more efficient at feeding as well and will take the milk much more quickly from your boobs.

You're all doing brilliantly

Lucy
