Breastfeeding Support Thread

oh I added the link and did not even know I was doing it right!

Jadie that's interesting as I was dyagnosed as a carrier of B-Strep while pregnant and therefore was on antibiotics during my labour, the only symptoms I can identify with is the shooting pains in the boobs. I checked Otis and he doesn't seem to have any symptoms in his mouth - as far as I can see! He does have a few white spots on him though.
Just in case I've already ordered the Bifidophilus Flora Force, and I've got my 6 week check on Monday so I can further discuss with my doctor. Also I picked up some infacol today and administered it twice already to Otis, during his feed he didn't half kick up a stink, so think I'm going to refrain from using any more at the mo!

Hi everyone, i have time to write properly now :)

Thanks for the advice on lying down and feeding I'll check it out tonight!

Snap daggers! My right boob is prducing much more milk than the left, especially for the 4am ish feed!

Jadie thanks so much for that link, it definitely looks like Loerah and I have thrush! I had a ceasarean and I think they gacve antibiotics to reduce infection. Leorah has the white tongue and nappy rash. Daggers could be that our babies are fussing because of this and will be little angels when cured

Sorry the infacol doesn't seemto agree with Otis. Our homeopathic remedy came today, its called Magnesia Phosphoricus and we have to give one drop on the tongue. we´did this and about a minute later she did a big burp and then about 3 mins later threw up so that was ate of £12! :rotfl:

Jadie - what a great link. Daggers - I am also Strep B and had the anti-bs in labour and when Olivia was 3 wks old I developed thrush (although I'm sorry to say she was still fussy after treatment but it might cure your little one's fussing). The first doctor I went to prescribed Nystatin drops for Olivia and Daktarin gel for me to apply to my boobs. This didn't work and the pain remained (I'd describe my pain like someone was sticking needles into my boobs) so then I spoke to the bf councellor who said Flucanzole (not sure if that's the right spelling) is the best thing to treat thrush but as it's not licensed to treat it most doctors wont prescribe it so I went back to the Dr and got the flucanzole and daktarin gel for Olivia's mouth and it cured the thrush within a few days.

I was then told to make sure I had a banana and some natural yoghurt everyday to ward off thrush.

I'd get yourselves checked out, the only symptom Olivia had was a tiny bit of nappy rash.

Skatty, before I forget thought I'd mention this re feeding lying down as I thought it was highly amusing at the time, a while back I was BFing Oats man one morning in bed (lying down), didn't think he was latched on properly but left him to it anyway, then later in the shower I discovered he'd given me a hicky next to my nip!!! :rotfl: Silly sausage!
Cheers Lucy will further discuss with the doctor on Monday, sometimes I just think I'm making a big hooha about nothing. After all he is eating enough to be putting on the right amount of weight and he is only just 6 weeks really what can I expect from someone so young?! Today he did have an off day but I'm putting this down to the infacol as really he normally doesn't cause a stink like he did today during his feeds (both bottle and boob). So I'll see how we get on tomorrow, each day brings something new eh!?

Oh I hope I have helped you! As soon as you start the medicaton it will get better. Oliver was 6 weeks before I realised what was the problem!

Jadie

Just after i posted here my DH rang the doc to get an appoimtment for sat morning because we decided there was definitely something wrong with Leorah and thought maybe its thrush as I have painful boobs. Well I chatted on the phone and mentioned she was early and sleeping loads, intestial painn etc and they told us to go straight to teh hospital to have a check up. Well we ended up having to stay in for the night and she had blood tests. They thought she might be jaundiced but I was sure she wasn't because she was at birth and was very yellow, now she just has olive skin like mine. It turns out she has a virus and its not bacterial so she can't take anything for it. We are home now and the poor little thing is fast asleep. She can't suckle properly because she can't breath through her nose so we have drops to clear her nostrils before feeds but she
hasn't got much appetite so I have to power pump to keep my milk up!

The first doc we saw said she had fungus in the mouth and then the second said they thought it was just milk. I'll see how the pain in my boobs is and then go to my own doc if it gets any worst. Hope you are all having a good weekend.

:rotfl: about your hicie daggers, Leorah bruised my nipple doing the same! :rotfl:

Oh dear, how is she now?? I hope this is the cause of her pain so that she will be loads better when the infection passes!

Jadie

Aww poor little Leorah. How is she doing now hun?

Gabriella has this rash on her face, the hv thinks it's eczema or baby rash, we have aqueos cream for it but doesn't seem to be helping at the mo. It seems to flare up more when she gets stressed or is feeding.

Her colic was really bad this evening as well, I am hoping the infacol will kick in soon.

Hope you are all doing well.

Talk soon :D

Hi Tina

{{{{ paranoid moment where I worry that I start to sound like "oh I had that"}}}}}}} but I wanted to say that Olivia had a rash on her face for a while - the DR said it was my hormones coming out through the milk which can sometimes cause baby acne . They offered my hydrocortisone cream (sorry about spelling) but my little sister had bad ezcema and had the cream and has lots of scarring so I didn't want to use that as it thins the skin (I believe when overly used).. so the BF councellor advised me to put breastmilk on her rash and it did seem to go away.
I was trying to sort out a photo of her rash when it was bad but none of them really show the rash at all, it was like wee spots over her cheeks, quite high up on her face and they were little raised bumps.

Just out of interest, do you swaddle your baby Tina? I have read this can be very soothing for colicy babies.

Lucy

I'm pleased to say Leorah is much betetr this morning :cheer: She went 6 hours without feeding last night but I think this has more to do with her bug than anything else. She was very noisy all night though, fidgeting and making sounds so i didn't benefit at all

Tina I agree with Lucy about trying the breastmilk on the rash, that's waht they advise in denmark too. I do hope the infacol works for you. I wouldn't say its been a miracle but it really has helped Leorah bring up her wind, I just wish it would help the other end as she has such pain when pooing. The doctors say she should be better by 3 months when she is more developed. I have a gro bag type of thing called a swaddleeaze and if Leorah is fussing even during the day and I think she needs to relax I put her in it and she settles dowwn loads so definitely try swaddling if you haven't already. I do hope she's beeter soon

On a different subject did you know if your baby has a stuffy nose you can put breastmilk in a syringe (no needle!) and put it up their nose before feeding? It seems lik miracle stuff that we make doesn't it?

I have to just say my boobs are still painful after feeding, I definitely think all is not right and Leorah's nappy rash isn't getting any better. I'll mention it to the HV tomorrow.

Evening ladies just catching up on all your posts, Skatty sorry to hear about Leorah at least you now know why she has been so unsettled, I hope she gets better soon  .
It's amasing to hear the healing effects breast milk has I must remember this if Oats gets unwell, in saying that don't know what was up with the little fellow last night, we went for a long walk, after which I thought I'd quickly give him some 'super juice' in a the car so that he isn't to hungry then when we got home bathed him and got his bottle ready, of which he didn't really have any!!! So I was a wee bit concerned however he fell asleep quite quickly by about 7pm and finally woke around 11:30pm. My OH always does the night shift with him, so I left him to it. Then at about 1:30am I woke to Oats scream / crying, apparently he'd been sick and he wasn't settling so we decide to put him in our bed were he finally did go to sleep but it was a most restless night - so no sleep for mommy!!! What can you do! He's seems fine now I was just concerned that maybe he was picking up some bug or maybe it was something in my milk? Fingers crossed he'll have a peaceful night tonight. Seeing the doctor tomorrow so will see if she thinks I'm just a stress monger or if I could possibly have a yeast infection (even though I'm not really showing any symptoms, why can't this being a mommy mallarky be a bit simpler?!

Hi ladies

Lucy, I wouldn't have even thought about putting breast milk on Gabriella's rash but will give that a go. The aqueos just seemed to make her worse. DH put a bit of sudocream on her and this seems to have worked wonders.

We do swaddle Gabriella at night but she is getting more and more fidgety now. SHe had a really bad colic episode yesterday but she hasn't had one at all today and today is day 5 with infacol, so fingers crossed it has worked.

Skatty I am glad Leorah is doing better hun.

Daggers, poor little Otis I hope you get on ok at the doctors tomorrow hun and I hope you have a better night.

Night night all, talk soon

Evening all! Well Leorah is getting better but is still quite sleepy, it was our first day on oyur own today, DH back at work and it was lovely :)

Daggers how did the doc go? Since Leorah got her virus she is more prone to being sick and is hard to settle at times and just sleeps loads at other times.

Tina, do hope the infacol is working for gabriella, its so hard when you can't settle them isn't it?

The HV came today and she said the little smiles from Leorah are real and not wind and she should be grinning lots soon :D She also said she very strong with good head control. It was the first time I had this HV and she was surprised at how alert she is considering she was so early so that really pleased me. She also weighs 7½lb now  My milk must be pure lard because she hasn't been feeding much as she's ill, I think she's going to be a right little fatty

Fingers crossed we all get a good night tonight

Yeah Skatty glad to hear the HV's good news, and yes ain't our 'super juice' just fab stuff! By the looks of it we may both have a couple of porkers  .
Nothing of interest to report really after having gone for my 6wk check at the doctors, I did mention the yeast infection option to her but she said that I know would if I had it as my nips would be cracked and sore and my boobs would be quite painful (of which I have neither), and also that Otis would have definate signs in his mouth - and he doesn't have any white marks in his mouth. So I've just but it down to me being an overly concerned mom - great I'm starting to become a worry wart!!! It seems that when he goes nuts it must be because of my heavy flow of breast milk. In saying that I quickly tried to express some milk both this morning and just now and I hardly got anything!!!!! I'll try again before I go to bed as I won't be breast feeding Otis now until about 2/3am so hopefully I would have collected some by then :? I hope it's just cause Oats has been feeding a bit more today than usual.

Hi Daggers

I was only able to express lots of milk when my boobs were engorged, the rest of the time if I wanted to express some I used the pump on one side whilst I fed Olivia on the other . Don't worry though, even if you are unable to express any milk it is not a sign that your milk is drying up or that there wont be enough for your baby. Your milk supply is settling down now and the milk is now produced when your baby sucks rather than being stored like in the early days.

Well done everyone

Lucy

Daggers i will take a look in my breastfeeding book and see what it says :)

:) You're very welcome  I had such a hard time with the breastfeeding at the start but I got a lot of support and help on here and I am just sooooooooooo glad I kept going and know now that I would've been very sad if I had given up.

I wish there was more information for mums to be on just what breastfeeding involves - just so that we can prepare ourselves for it!

At a bfing clinic not far from me they do 20 pieces of your ironing and give you a £5 Asda voucher every week! They appreciate how hard it can be!

Lucy

Wow! I wish there was a breastfeeding clinic here. It seems we can only get comfortable in the football hold position as the regular position suffocates poor Leorah with my huge boobs!

She still doesn't seem well and I am very concerned about the amount of pain she gets when she has a poo so we are seeing the doc tomorrow. I am fed up of the docs and HV saying her digestive system is immature but not investigating if there is another problem.

I was also feeling rough today and woke up to a snow storm! The news warned everyone that due to the winds the temp would feel like minus 15 degrees so I took it as a great excuse to stay in bed with leorah until 1pm watching dvds

Tina is gabriella's colic any better?

Daggers, I consulted my breastfeeding bible ( ) and it says the same reasons as you already thought of, fast flow or that you may have eaten something strong tasting. It does also say if you have exercised the lactic acid can make your milk taste odd, I don't know if you are exercisng yet? I actually want to start soon and am going to ask the doc tomorrow if I can before 8 weeks because in the US I think they get the all clear at 5 weeks after a section.
