BLWers

24 weeks I think, 5months 2weeks. early because she was putting everything into her mouth so tried banana and it went from there. Slowly at first coz we were on holiday anyway and then full throttle from 6months! It's amazing, hope you enjoy it

26 weeks I think! One week before his 6 month birthday so my oh was home to join in

I'm really torn Tyler's 24 weeks on Friday and I really wanted to wait and for OH to be there as he's missed everything else but he's away the next few weekends so he'll miss Tyler turning 6 months. I don't agree with weaning early or weaning 'just because' but I really want him to be part of it!

I wouldn't really class a few days as 'early weaning' hun. Does he seem ready for having a go?? Xxx

On my iPhone - so cant see tickers :(

We started at 5 months as we couldn't stop Dylan from grabbing food and taking it to his mouth. I spoke to a lot of people before starting who all said to take the sign from the baby. We started slowly but had to start spoon feeding breakfast due to his weight gain (he now takes the spoon and feeds himself). X

Sort of. He's always been a big one for putting things in his mouth, he can sit unaided, he watches us put food in our mouths (I experimented with giving him a beaker of milk and me a bottle of water and he copied me drinking it) BUT I don't know if his swallowing is developed yet. If I give him calpol for example he still tries to push it out and when he drinks milk from a cup he spits it out the side of his mouth but I don't know if that's a taste thing?

Part of me thinks try something and see his reaction. If he's keen then go for it, of not wait? But then again BLW's don't necessarily take to it straight away.

The only way to know is to try him, I was surprised that harrison was so good at eating given that he is so young but from the first mouthful he eat properly!!

It doesn't matter about swallowing as blw'rs learn to chew first.then swallow so its not uncommon for food to fall out of there mouths for a while and they swallow nothing as they learn to.move food around there mouths.

They don't swallow much really for a few weeks, think of it as tasty toys! So he will be able to feel and smell as well as taste the food. 24 weeks is often classed as 6 months and he sounds ready as he can sit and has all the other signs. It would be a terrible shame for your oh to miss this as well since they get no part in bf that's why we waited for a good time when we could all join in a meal together.

We waited til 26 weeks coz of a history of some allergies/digestive problems in the family. Before 6 months there r some things they say not to give e.g. eggs, but Tyler does sound ready! I would go with ur instinct hun- u know him best xx

Hi hun

I think they say around 6 months because every baby is different, so give or take. I can't see how 6 months on the dot they're automatically ready iykwim.

I don't see the harm in trying tbh at all, but if you don't believe in starting early "just because" I'd maybe leave it as you seem to want to start because your OH won't be there.

I've never done BLW - but i'd imagine due to the nature of it that your best to wait as long as you can. But in saying that a few days wouldn't make a difference. All babies try & grab food & mimic adults movements with food that ISN'T a sign that LO is ready. The only thing necessary is that LO is sitting up un-aided & has good head support. With this one you need to use your best judgement, we weaned kayden 1 week b4 6 months but that was standard weaning, as I said, cant imagine a few days making a diff.

I keep getting it in my ear 'he was 2 weeks late' he's VERY good at sitting up on his own. Part of me thinks BLW is about baby taking the lead so if I sit him down with carrot (for eg) and he's not interested, he's not ready? But if he is, he is?

Goodness it's all so hard! He's been feeding so much more the last couple of days, there isn't a 23/24 week growth spurt is there? He's generally had his early.

Thats what makes BLW so hard hun, he could be ready to wean & be hungry but not eat the carrot...and you would assume he's not hungry/ready!

Could you try spoon feeding for a few days so you have a rough guide of how much he takes, then you have something to judge it on when you move to blw iykwim

BLW isn't about satisfying 'hunger', in fact it's suggested that you actually offer food at times they're not hungry.
BLW isn't 'hard' if you understand it.

I'm not saying BLW is 'hard' I'm saying that having to make these choices for a little human being is! Never had this sort of responsibility to judge when someone else can or wants to do something iykwim?

And the reason I ask about growth spurt is because people confuse the 4 month one with wanting to wean. I want to check from all sides that it's right to do and I don't want to use a growth spurt as a reason if that makes sense?
