I just had my baby on the 20th May so this is only her 4th day in the world. She has been feeding constantly which has caused my nipples to crack and bleed. She has spit up both a small blood clot and a bit of coffee brown coloured curdled looking breast milk. I'm pretty confident it's my blood from my sore nipples as I phoned the midwifes at the post natal ward i just left yesterday to be sure and they reassured me my nipples were most likely the cause. I was just wondering if you ladies have any tips aside from putting nipple cream on to help speed the healing process along. It's just not very nice for baby as I think the blood is making her a little more sick than she otherwise would be. Xx

Sorry to hear this hun :-/ My only suggestion would b nipple shields? I haven't tried them personally but could b worth a go xx

Breast milk also helps them heal. I used to smother lansinoh on then cover them with cling film to stop them sticking to and rubbing on my bra.

She will be more sick as her tummy can't handle your blood but it will get better really soon xxx

Thanks ladies I've been smothering them in nipple cream. The cling film suggestion is useful though will give that a go. Think I just need to push through til things get a bit easier as it's very early days and my nipples aren't used to it yet. Xx

Lansinoh is safe to wear when BF so can help as a barrier xx

I had this problem but also my baby was in NICU for a few days and I needed to combi feed to get her to put her birth weight back on. I had to express. I found alternating between expressing and breastfeeding really helped my nipples to heal and from 4 weeks I was exclusively breastfeeding and did so for 13 months.

It's certainly not an ideal solution but if it becomes unbearable for you the option is always there.
Otherwise as others have said Lansinoh is brilliant as is airing out your boobs at night, it will really speed up the healing process. Hope you feel better hun!xxx

I had this when my LO was just born. I had to bottle feed until my nipples stopped bleeding, as she was taking in too much blood and it was making her sick which meant she started to lose weight.
