Hi All, just wanted to write up my birth story after the birth of my little girl.
Here is the (rather eventful) birth story:
Last Saturday and Sunday I hadn't really felt her move much at all and I tried lying in lots of different positions, drinking ice cold water etc and still couldn't feel her. Late Sunday morning (as i was getting ready for my baby shower) I decided to go to triage to get a heart trace as I was so worried. They had me there for 2 hours as the heart rate was strong at around 145bpm but invariable and they explained they like to see variability in a heart beat. The doctor came to look and told us we needed to get the baby delivered asap. They admitted me to the labour ward where they were going to try and break my waters. This didn't work as I was only 1cm dilated. Also it was excruciating and they had made me use gas and air which made me feel out of control and drunk! They were then going to induce me and and all the gels ready when the baby's heart rate dropped dangerously low. At this point the room seemed to fill with nurses and doctors and I was rushed into theatre with the intention of putting me under general anaeasthetic as it was quicker than a spinal block or epidural. I was really upset about this. The doctor did a quick scan and the heartbeat went back up so I was given a spinal block (which didn't hurt at all). 5 mins later little E made her appearance and she seemed well and healthy.
However later in recovery the midwife noticed that she was pale and a bit floppy, not crying much and her body temp was low (34). They took some blood tests and immediately returned as they saw she had a really low blood count (hemoglobin level was 5 and newborns should be 15) and that they would need to do a blood transfusion asap. They wheeled her off with my husband. He spared me the details of the procedures as I don't think I was ready to hear about them all (and stil am not) as i know her oxygen level dropped also but since then she's been making a good recovery. They discovered that she had been bleeding into me via the placenta for about 6-7 weeks and lost 1/3rd of her blood volume. This is scary but also good news as it means there won't be any long term health issues nor the chance of her bleeding again.
She's since lost 12% of her birth weight which were slowly slowly getting her to put back on (now at 10%) but this is the last concern thankfully!
The moral of this story is always always always listen to your intuition and never ever care about wasting anyone's time!
Thanks to anyone who's read this far!xxx
