Does anyone else know they're having a big baby? I'm 35+6 today (although still think I should be 36+6) & he is 7ib 3oz already (i was only 7ib 6oz when I was born!) - this is mostly due to my oh being 6ft5 but doc also told me to cut down on sugar to limit his growth now.....means I'm on ice lolly rations, boo! If he carries on at this rate & I go over he could be 10ib+!!! My oh was 9ib 13oz....arrghhhhh

Doc also told me cs rates at my hospital are nearly 30%.....I can see where this is going! x

My husband is 6ft 4 (I'm 5ft 3!) and I've been worrying about this for months! No one has said anything about how much they think it'll weigh and I've always measured normal (though behind now as baby is down). I was only 6lb 5 when I was born. I want a nice small newborn!

This reply doesn't help other than I'm scared too!

I thought he'd be about 6ib5 at this stage, I've had a bit of a shock! I'm 5ft6 so not particularly small but neither of us are particularly big built (although my oh would disagree judging by the size of me now! Lol) - its going to certainly sting if he comes out naturally! At least I'm prepared though! x

Your body is unlikely to grow a baby too big for you to birth - no matter the size of your OH! Obviously there are exceptions. It usually comes down to the size of your pelvis though and I've been told noone really knows how big it is until you've had a baby!

Try and stay nice and calm about it - weights from growth scans are rubbish anyway (assuming that's where yours came from). A work colleague was told at 35 weeks baby was 8lb already (mum has diabetes so always knew a big baby was likely), and when induced at 38 weeks they had to section because of slow progress "probably due to baby being so big"... Baby was born at 6lb 15! So they were way out!

Mines currently estimated at 7 and a half pounds - but that's from a midwife having a feel. Ask yours at your next appt if she can guess weight/if its a big baby (but ignore any comment related to fundal height - that's also rubbish for judging baby's size!!)

Xx

I go to a private obstetrician & yeah the weight came from a scan. Fingers crossed its wrong, I don't want a small baby, I'd prefer a little chunk but I really don't want a csection, nor do I want an annihilated foof!!! Lol x

Please try not to worry, take the weights with a pinch of salt alice was estimated at 10lb, both me and oh are 6ft tall and I weighed 9lb 11oz when I was born and my mum is 5 foot 4. Anyway she was born and weighed a lovely 8lb 15oz so not big and deffinatly no where near what they said.

My hospital no longer give out weights to women because my consultant said they where wrong 50% of the time and they where giving inductions to women and c sections for 6lb babies! She said they don't induce due to size now in my trust although there all different mine said unless there are other reasons like diabeties the body shouldn't grow a baby.

My friend never had growth scans and her second baby was born naturally weighing 11lb 3oz, even though he was huge they had no idea he would be so no one panicked and induced her or anything and she gave birth to a whopper on her own (I think maybe with a vontouse)

That was her 2nd baby her first was an 8lber and she has just had her third who again is a 8lber, they think maybe she got diabeties but was never checked because she has a low bmi (and is about 5ft high) xx

Trying to estimate baby's size is notoriously unreliable, and big baby doesn't necessarily mean you'll tear badly....lets face it, even a small baby is going to hurt!

It is true though, that mother nature normally does a pretty good job, and won't grow you a baby too big for you to birth.

ill just add I had an 8lb 6oz baby the second time without a tear but some can rip from front to back with a 6lb baby, you just cant tell... maybe I have a bucket and shouldn't shout about that though x

I'm 5ft2, and OH is 5ft10, so niether of us are tall :)
We both weighed about 7lb when born......and I went on to give birth to a 9lb2oz boy! My little chunk!
I have been told that this time I'll be expecting to be near to 10lb, :(
My labour wasn't too bad - I did have to have a epiostomy, but that was due to him wanting to come out with his fist next to his head :(
I don't think they can predict how big they are going to be :) I would try not to worry about it...as at the end of it all it doesn't matter how big/small they are xx

Based on estimations from my growth scan I should have had at least an 8lb baby @ 40w. I had him at 41w and he was 7lb 8oz!

Try not to worry, also bigger babies are meant to be easier to birth as they use the force of gravity much more efficiently

xxxxx

im measuring full term now, scans confirm that. my last baby was almost 11lb totally natural delivery. i was 7lb 7oz born but im 6ft tall and 20 odd stone and broad so i do think that you grow a baby your body can cope with so im not too worried about getting this baby out either

My lo was estimated at 8lb something but was 10lb! Whatever the size it's nothing to worry about x

I am!! I know I'm quite far away from my due date but I've been told my baby is going to be big!!! I have been told to stop eating sugar!
We don't know how it's happened! Me an my boyfriend are tiny! I am a size six - eight!
I'm finding it really hard cutting down on my sugar, especially when I'm craving cake :( xxx

I've been told to cut back on sugar too :o( ill be on a hardcore diet as soon as bubs is born so I was enjoying eating what I want!!! X

I had the opposite! I was told that baby was 6lb 7oz at 37 weeks, I was induced at 38+6 & baby was only 5lb 12oz - you can imagine the shock lol! I didn't have anything that fitted him!

My best friend grew a baby too big for her- when a baby doesn't fit through the birth canal it's classed as too big!

3 epidurals and 1 spinal block later an emergency c section was performed after 3 days of labour going no where - my god son is the most perfect little boy ever though! ( unless I have a boy of course)

I know!!!! Horrible isn't it :( I'm naughty and I have a slice of cake every night to keep me going!!!xxx

My oh Is 6ft+ and I was estimated to have an 8lb + baby he came naturally at 38w and weighed only 6lb 11oz I don't think he would've stuck inside of me until he was so big I wouldn't be able to deliver him. If that is your hospitals c section rate id wonder if there's not a higher induction rate that turns out to be emergency c section and unnecessary sections with babies that could easily been born naturally don't get to wound up by sizes and hospital stats when that's the only information you've been given :)

I was told to expect a big baby when I had a growth scan at 29 weeks. My bump always measured ahead as well. Baby was then estimated at 7lb 6 when I was 37+4 weeks and was born 7lb 14 at 38+5 (which considering they say baby puts on an ounce a day at that point means they were spot on with the growth scan. She was a long baby, but in terms of weight she was a nice size and not what I'd class as big. Even if I'd gone to full term she'd have been about 8lb 8.

Just echoing what has been said above really....the weights you are given can be spot on, but they can also be way off too!

I was told that my LO was weighing in at over 6lbs at around 34 weeks and that I could expect a 10lber if I kept drinking the amount of fruit juice I was going through!

A stand in midwife felt my belly at my 38 week check up and said she could "feel" I was going to have at least an 11lber! I spent the last couple of weeks of pregnancy dreading labour...I was terrified!

It turns out I was carrying a ridiculous amount of fluid...JJ arrived on his EDD and he weighed in at a nice healthy 7lb 13oz. xx
