i know its probably really early to be thinking about this, but i want to be prepared!

i am claiming employment and support allowance at the moment, but was wondering if i would be entitled to anything else later on, because i know i wont be able to take care of both myself and my baby on what i get now, plus i may be living in my own flat by then, so gas, electricity, rent too. i get my food and stuff paid for at the moment so that as well! :???:

i cant work at the moment, and havnt been able to for a while.

i would ask my care-coordinator, but she's being a moo and not answering my calls.

sorry for practically giving you my life story there!
just prematurley panicking!!! lol
x

u would be entitled to vouchers for milk fruit/veg during preg. if u arent able to care for yourself then u should be able to claim disability living allowance if u arent already claiming this,u should get housing and council tax benefit paid if u do move into your own place and a few weeks before baby is born u get a grant of about 500 pounds towards the cost of baby things and after baby is born u can apply for child tax credits and child benefit.
sometimes if u are on high enough disability living allowance social work gives u an extra allowance which u can use to get people in to help u if needed.

I take it your a single mum? no partner?

You should be able to claim - Income support where you will only need to attend the jobcentre every six months until your baby reachs 5 I think atm until then you will be fine.

You can claim the milk vouchers already for yourself, ask jobcentre for application and get midwife or doctor to sign it saying you are actually pregnant :D

Once you reach 29 weeks pregnant you can apply for the grant to help you buy things for the baby. :)

Rent, council tax will be paid for once you sort out your benefits. I'm sure your social worker or support worker will help in that process if and when you move out x

Once baby is born you can claim, Child benefit - £20.13 a week
And Child Tax Credit - Varies between £58-63 a week.

ah another thing i remembered the father is responsible for maintaining the child even if he isnt around so u can always ask the child support agency to collect money from him on your behalf and now the woman gets all the money where as in the past the greedy gov kept it all.
my OH decided he was sick of my ex not providing for my teen sons and sneakily informed them about him and ive now started getting payments, but they take it straight from his employer cause the pr*ck refused to pay up ( cant miss out on his 4 holidays a yr can he ) oh well now he has to. shame for him good for my kids lol

thanks ladies :)

i dont have a partner, and have no clue how to get hold of the father, dont know anything about him (weird story)
but what i do know, is he was a complete d*ck, and i wouldnt want anything from him anyway. and would probably have to go through court and everything, like my mum had to do with us, and my dad still got out of paying.
sorry, rant over.

when do you think i should tell the jobcentre about my pregnancy? i know they like to be notified about every single little thing pretty soon...

xx

I told them as soon as I found out and I was in joint claim for job seekers. You get signed off at 29 weeks thank god.

I feel for you on the hopeless dad front my dad never paid my mum anything for the three kids he had with her x

ill call jobcentre tomorrow, i need to call them to register change of address anyway.

grrrrr at hopeless dads!
my dad always did 'cash in hand' jobs to get out of paying child support, the only reason he went to university a few years ago was also so he didnt have to cough up any cash.
he only wanted to see us every weekend so he could get a bigger house from the council, when he got it, he stopped seeing us.
such an idiot!

You can claim Income support from 11 weeks before baby is due if you are on your own and your child benefit with a bit extra for being a single parent. You now should be getting you milk/veg vouchers which are £3.10 a week plus free vitamins for you every 2 weeks you get from the midwife and when baby comes you get £6.20 a week. If this is your first you can also claim the maternity grant for the job centre for £500.

I claim ESA to hun although I have applied for DLA and have been refused twice but you could try depends why you claim ESA. XXXXXXXXxxx

thanks hun :)

i am eligible for DLA, i was accepted a while ago, but was in hospital so couldnt claim.
i didnt actually want it, as i dont consider myself disabled and would feel bad about taking it, but if i can still get it, i think i will, for the baby.

Also just wanted to add, that if you care co-ordinator isn't being very responsive, you can always give your local Advocacy a call and they'll be able to give you an help and advice you may need.
